If you are planning or are attending an offshore school in the caribbean or elsewhere, quit or try to get into a US school. The reason is that the U.K (England, Ireland, Scotland, NZ, Austrailia, etc ) has slammed the door on foreign doctors in 2006 and those doctors are flooding into the USA ! This is why residency programs want scores in the mid 90's for IM, Psych and Family Med. I had friends that matched with 75,75 into fp,IM,psych 2 years ago. Programs are getting thousands of applications from doctors that were prohibited from entering the UK for residency; they are now rushing to the USA for the match. Score cutoffs for most programs I contacted was 94 !!!
Canada is also out of the question.

The High Court recently upheld changes brought in by the government last year, which make it harder for overseas doctors to train and work in the UK.
Many doctors will find it hard to get new jobs because of the changes, the British Medical Association said.
The changes were prompted by the massive rise in numbers at medical school threatening a glut of doctors.
The British Association of Physicians of Indian Origin, which is appealing against the High Court ruling and has set up a legal fund, has said the changes are unfair to those who have made sacrifices to come to the UK to train and start a career.
Tightened guidance
On 3 April 2006, the rules were changed so that only graduates of UK medical schools could qualify for the government's "permit-free training" scheme.
Shortly afterwards, the Department of Health tightened the guidance for trusts employing doctors entering the country on the parallel Highly Skilled Migrant Programme.
This change means that overseas doctors can only be considered for posts if there is no candidate from the European Economic Area - the EU plus Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein - qualified to do the job.
Many overseas doctors - who came to the country when there was a shortage of doctors - face losing their jobs when their contracts come up for renewal.
I have 3 friends that have to return to India as a result of this.

Australia ?? but i hear they have opened the doors and lots of docs are flooding in there??
anyway, the competition never gets easier. we have to keep going no matter what.

Yes, they start to open door for FMG. But as far as I know they give you position for rural areas, and only certain specialties.
Keep on going no matter what, that's the best thing to do!

First of all , my freinds in UK have informed me just 3 days back that they won in court and now wil have equal opportunities in comparison to the EU docs.
SECOND__________ there is no place in this world u will not have to compete , it is law of nature my dear : BIG FISH EATS SMALL FISH, n if u translate it into the modern world , small fish is someone with low self esteem and lack of fightinf spirit .
so guys work ur ass off n be positive!!!!!

Thats right Rashi06. I totally agree with you and the other posts here. There's competition everywhere and in every field.
And yes, foreign doctors in the UK have won their case in court so now they're on par with EU doctors. Hopefully that will stem some of the rush of docs to the US!
