Hello Dr's,

Any one knows what is the maximum number of attempts for STEP 1 in California?

Thanks for input

As much as you need, but only 3 per year, at least 60 before reapplying and (in most states) must complete all USMLE components in 7 years

If you are planning to work outside the US, then disregard this post.

If you are interested in a permanent license to work in the US after residency, then you need to look at the state's licensing rules. Some states have a cap on the # of attempts, and this includes ALL of the steps, not just part 1. Each state is different, check yours at http://www.fsmb.org. I have seen some states require that all 3 steps must be passed in no more than 5 attempts within a 7-year time frame after graduating medical school. Also consider that multiple attempts at passing Step 1 might keep you from matching into a residency position.
