Hi I wanted to know if I should drop the idea of taking futher usmle steps as my step 2 score was 77 which i got it recenlty.
I am terribly depressed. I am an IMG from india graduated in 2001 oct. Now working in Uk since then in medicine..
I have booked for step 1 in june. n waiting for the CS result.
I going to do observership/ externship for 3 months from june...
I want to apply for both family medicien and internal medicine.
Looking at the 2007 match result it seems its very competetive.

I wanted to know if there is any chance for me in 2008 match??

Please please reply..

Thank you..

I mean I wanna know do they consider only step scores for short listing??

  #3

don't loose hope u have chances
first your golal is try hard for step 1 get good score
do some USCE
GOOOD LUCK

  #4

Go for Step 1.
If you do well, you will have high chances of getting matched.

  #5

thanks for ur kind replies..

do u know anyone with scores like this matching in a residency??

  #6

i am just anxious

  #7

Sachu: I understand your anxiety. Yes, it's likely you can match into a residency program, whether FM, IM or peds. But you have to improve the remainder of your credentials/application. Good luck!

Thank u Vanshita, gas1, and chemamr..

I am planning to do oservership/ externship from july . is it worth doing for 3 months or 1.5 months is sufficient ? is it longer the better?

N for california letter can i apply now or do i need to pass all the steps before applying.? plz reply...thanx

  #9

You can apply for cal letter now, concentrate on your following exam much more that observership. the main reason for doing observership is to get strong LoRs. you will hit the spot with those letters. Letters are the most important part.

Its very tough here man....get above 90 at least,

  #11

guys!

don't make him nervous!

just do your best,Sachu, don't think about the scores, otherwise you'll drive yourself nuts-and you will be fine.

of course, all the things mentioned above are important, but don't get nervous, and it's gonna be fine. I know guite a few people, old grads, low scores,no usce,no good lors, who made it in internal medicine.

good luck

DOnt give him false hopes Alenka............At least now he can back out .......after investing a fortune he will feel less inclined to back out.

A mighty pain it is to not be matched ,

And 'tis a pain that pain to miss;
But of all pains, the greatest pain
It is to try, but try in vain."

Dear Sachu, I did not mean to discourage you, Try your best and score high for S1, dont think of S2 and the past. Do try doing mock exams before the real one.

is it possible to apply for california residency if i have applied for cal letter n awaiting for the step 3 result n any other deficients for cal letter? or do we need the cal letter in hand fully b4 applying for residency in california?? plz reply guys..thank uuu...

  #14

You can certainly try... the application is composed by several parts and the steps are only one of them (a very important one)... you still can improve your creds and try to open your way in a particular program by doing an elective... also try to consider applying to programs in other not so competitive states...

Good Luck gringringrin

I think non competetive states are like in north east part of US I think..But everyIMG will be applying to those states so it makes it competetive again!!!
So I will apply to all the programms and see where I get interview...gringrin

  #17

I dont think there are anything like non competitve states now....EVery where I interviewed guys were there with 99/99 scores.

Just my 2 cents All this talk weer relevant when there was a visa crunch after 9/11. Now visa 's are being minted out to anyone with > 85 scores.

God Help Us.

Sachu...u can always try & give it ur best shot...in that way u won't regret later in ur life that only if i had tried i might have gotten residency somewhere....so it's our job to try our best & leave the rest on God.....REMEMEBER u can do it & god will help if u tried... as even the small birds have to get out of their nest to get the food...it doesn't come on it's own to their nest!!!

BEST OF LUCK TO ALL WHO TRY!!!

Calif is very competitive in comparison with other states, just by the fact that you need a special document to apply there (PTAL)...then again that is my personal opinion...

The competiveness is not related by locations, but by what each program is looking for. Ideally, you should only apply to programs that want what you have in your CV, and throughout the US there are several programs that will accept you with your scores. If Calif is what you want try to search for programs that will consider your application and focus on getting into those.

Good Luck!!

i have got chance of doing observership/externship in maryland ...its for 1month initially.
is it worth extending it n doing for 3 months or lors from 1month usce is enough?

  #21

Sachu,

Yes, now adays is very tough , speaking of 99/99. Has GC or not, etc, no visa issue over need visa, etc. Even though , most famous circulating news among IMG are... mostly... young, recent grad, 99,99 they did not match in more than 1 yr. in a roll. But 1st yr. only apply for all v. good Universities, not ask for contacts , did not know what 2nd yr that Dr. apply for. But still did not match.

But also had Dr, young grad, but not recent, v. low score 1st attempt in all ,2 yr ago, got matched , but might had the contacts in FM.
Then one Dr. got matched v. late , after some one switched/ choosed to another program, so that Dr with low score matched at the v. good program in v. v. late after matched day , by the time the above 99 Dr. did not match .
Also see advertizing, crying for urgent residencies opening spots to fill in PGY1 or 2 around or before or after matched or in odd time of the yr. Sept . etc.

So keep the hope high, expect the best & the worst too.

So , not only hard work, luck, contacts , also count. So do not give up, but do not gave up UK job too, in case after observership or everything, you still like in UK. Has senoirs yrs yrs ago, went to UK after all successful USA residencies etc.

Re; California, residency for IMG usually very hard to get, but again, if has good contacts, help may be.

Re; 1 mo or 3 mo, if not a problem for your exam & financial, I rather go longer peroid 3 mo. Has senior passed almost all last yr, done 1 mo. mini residency, prematch more than one, good score, but not all score got on time as the program standard... so not matched after all. Then this yr. went for more mini residency months to get more USCE, all are paid program.
Good Luck & all the best.

Could you share how to get the observership in that Maryland & what exactly is the program location, name & contact or others. Also any fees need to pay.
You can pm me if you feel more convenient.

Best of lucknod
