I think a major concern to program directors that make them reluctant to hiring an IMG intern is because first of all, they think IMGs are unpredictable. Although some IMGs may have excellent scores and research experiences they may not be accustomed to the US health system, have poorer clinical skills, huge cultural differences that may lead to misunderstandings, poor language skills etc, all of which may not be readily reflected on ones CV. Also, an simple short interview often won’t convince the PDs that IMGs are reliable.

That’s why you may need more than that esp. if you are a none native English speaker from a 3rd world country. Such as US clinical experience, LORs from US docs, network and more. With that being said, double 99 and publications certainly doesn’t hurt and could only benefit your match.

Be the way it seems as if you are typing with a broken arm or something, please stop using too many unnecessary abbreviations. It makes it difficult to read.

You in final year of MBBS? I am guessing you are in India. My best suggestion is look for a research institute in your city (which may be tough in Indian scenario) and do a summer project which is usually for 2 months. Research may not appeal every doctor. But believe me, I am currently doing PhD in US, after completing my MBBS. And I love research. Even though you may not like research, its very important in a doctor's career that you understand how research is actually done. Research adds a fresh perspective to a doctor's intellect; we bogged down with all that mugging and regurgitating will have a better appreciation for medicine if we know how medical research is done. This is my opinion.

im also doin my intern.. i ve published n presented 2 to 3 papers.. but the scope for research in indian colleges r less except in some big institutes.. v get to do mostly epidemiology work n statistical work... funds r lackin..bioguy, got anythin to stay abt this?? also any suggestions r welcome..

  #5

I totally understand ur feeling...me too, last yr med ..but could not concentrate on studying ....

Hi,bioguy...Can I ask you something???
I think it is great to do research because you can understand more basic concepts. I also think of doing phd in US and in the process of searching for information which seems like deep in the sea. Do you think there is any chance for a fresh med grad with no reseach experiences to get a Phd position in US?I wish the answer is YES,if so which test I have to sit for...I mean GRE general test , GRE subject test or anything? Please tell me...

  #6

I have a question too, Bioguy, and I’d like to hear your opinion. Say a med student has done summer research fellowships as well as 1 or 2 independent research projects throughout his time in med school each summer for 6 years, would he still benefit from taking a phd education? I mean 5 – 6 summers is about 1 year of research experience, wouldn’t that be sufficient for someone to conduct serious research projects later on without a phd background?

Supposedly the point of taking a phd is to learn how to conduct independent research and 1 year of research exp should already give you some insight on how things are done, thus making it useless for that person to take the phd. What do you think?

A clinical elective is better than a research position in terms of matching a residency position. As a student you can get electives easier than as if you were a graduate..

Good Luck

Everything Helps !!!

But AS Jack has said PDs have a hard time IMGs so if u have a USCE or Reasearch done under ur belt in US then it gives them an insight into ur ability to work with them for the next 4-5 yrs. It helps u a Lot doing some Research in ur Native Country but it will only show that u r have experience in Doing Research ( the Ins & Outs of it ) . Thats abt it A publication wud also help u but wht the PDs ( i think) r looking for is someone who can adjust to their Working Envoirnment, he/she has to have a aptitude to adapt themselves over here in US.

you are right, meningioma. funds are lacking in india to get a paid research position. but the institutes always welcome summer interns. any publications are good for your resume, but it depends on your future goals. if you plan to do research in biomedical science then relevant publications (not epidemiology/statistics) will be preferable.

forevergood. if you are interested in research I strongly suggest you to do some summer internship in a research institute just to get a practical feel of how research is done. because practical research is a lot different from theoretical thinking. if you want to do PhD, you require GRE (general) and TOEFL, subject GRE puts you in a better position, but is not compulsory.

Jackofknives. you are partially true. you can do independent research if you know all the technicalities of it. i know a lot of MDs having their own research labs. but a PhD is an intensive experience which cannot be compared to multiple summer projects.

isther, im an img doin my internship(compulsory internship for my graduation).. hw tough it is to get an clinical elective?? is observership good enough or externship is wat they want??? this question s open to all.. pls advise.. thanks!!

  #11

thanks bioguy for your quick reply..
Actually I had 6months lab experiment in Cadiovascular deparment at my university, it seems silly but that 6months is a must for graduation .. I do enjoy research work though not comparable with hand on practice, you know I prefer human contact....

I think of taking GRE, renew my TOEFL in 6months and then apply for postdoc or Phd in the States...I had a look some school hp about graduate education, postdoc education requisition, and most of them say that they look for applicant with M.D or M.D/Pd degree.

I ll graduate in Japan with a M.D degree but I dont know whether my diploma is applicable or not???whether a fresh graduate is what they look for????

I have sent to 5programs but no response till now....

  #12

i don't know situations specific to Japan, but generally from what I see around, MDs are always welcome to PhD programs, and ones with research experience are a step ahead.

Research is good...I personally like it... but in terms of matching a residency position, is way better to do a clinical elective. Several programs are not interested in having researchers as interns, they want clinicians or surgeons. Research positions will get you LOR explaining your skills as a researcher, unfortunately several PD won't give a crap about it... unless you search for a program in which research activities are highly considered.

meningioma, to get a rotation is tough, but you can get one, you may start by surfing the internet looking for observeships, or externships. If you have a friend that did one, contact him and ask...

Good Luck! grin

I am not from Indian. Maybe I don't fully understand your situation. But I know, if you want to apply for the pathology program in my hospital, you have to at least have two scores above 90. They only interview those people who have 90s. Why don't you just fucus on the exams? I have some IMG friends here, most of them have PhD, and they had been working in research for years with more than 10 papers. They all got 90s. But they don't think the research experience is a big help, they said if they could do the USMLE earlier, they wouldn't have to waste so many years in research.

Any way, the score is the king, unless you want to do research to get your permanent residence card first.

  #19

yeap, I can make a sense most people point of view. But let just have a practical thought....for IMG who currently stay outside the States and find it quite hard to get the VISA to land there in an adequate duration to manage all stuffs....Doing research is a good choice...gain diploma which is undoutful a strong support for your later promotion for both academic and clinical field, if not, a backup plan.

Anyways, it depends on what one chooses, and I think no matter what the decision is it will be fine if one can overcome all and go till the end.

P.S:I m hunting for PhD or continuing education position. Plz can anybody tell how? I am a fresh graduate in 2008 with no experience on hand...confused but still try and plz helpnod

Research is a good way of making connections with the people in the clinic and it shows dedication and perseverance, it’s a major help if you are applying for academic programs because this is an indication that you are likely to stay in academia once you graduate and continue their legacy.

You probably want to do it this way, 2 years of research followed by 1 year of pre-internship, or whatever they call it nowadays.

However, if you are applying for non-competitive specialties good USMLE scores per se is sufficient, I think.

Good luck

As I said before, "Research adds a fresh perspective to a doctor's intellect; we bogged down with all that mugging and regurgitating will have a better appreciation for medicine if we know how medical research is done. This is my opinion."

Many clinicians are not interested in basic biomedical research. Many clinicians don't know how basic research is done. But, research is not just sitting in A/C labs working with microbes. I cannot explain in one paragraph, the importance of research. But again, since very few people are interested in research in this forum, I won't go further in this topic.
