A 35 year old man has severe symptoms from Crohn's disease. He finally undergoes a hemicolectomy and is symptomatically improved. He is also put on azathioprine to maintain disease remission. Which of the following is INCORRECT?


A. Diarrhea after hemicolectomy may be caused by reduced bowel length for fluid and fat absorption

Answer: B) Diarrhea is a side effect of azathioprine.

Azathioprine is used when steroid withdrawal causes recurrent relapse. Bone marrow suppression (low white cell count) and pancreatitis are side effects of azathioprine but not diarrhea.

Cholestyramine binds bile salts and reduces intestinal irritation.

Sulphasalazine is broken down by colonic bacteria to 5-ASA.
