Hello Guys, First of all I want to thank you all of you for your time in advance. I need your honest advice! I have graduated in 1993, actually I tried two times for part 1 and 2 in the past, unfortunately, I couldn't get thru. After such a long time period, I am thinking of trying this year one more time. Do you think it's too late for me? BTW, I am 44 years old. Thak you. ZA

It's going to be hard... harder than the usual... you need to be informed of the whole thing and plan your strategy wisely... need to work harder than ever... but certainly is acheivable!!! Go for it! Good Luck!

Yup Sure its gonna be hard for u but if u plan ur self wisely n have learnt from ur past experience then it will be easier for U. U have to slow but build ur CONCEPTS Along the way. Cos its coming down to one thing only Concepts the USMLE have decided to test ur concepts. If u have ur concepts then u can easily go ahead with it n Clear it. Nothing is changed much Anatomy,Physio, Biochem,Genetics, almost half of Path is essentially the Same. U will find some difference in Pharma n Path as to managing n grading diseases but thats abt it pretty much. Best Of Luck Buddy

Dear Oldmed: This is a part of one of this forum's member whose name is mymeghgi, and his score was 99 percentile: And to my collegue who passed in 1984 I say with our experience and maturity we are at an advantage to do well in this exam like how wine matures and tastes better with age. So don't ever let anyone drag you down. If you beleive you can do it then you WILL DO IT!!! You can visit much more about his exam experiences on step 2ck forum, the name of thread is: I got a 286/99!!! in Step 2 CK (1, 2, 3, 4...7)

Ok... oldmed. I am 44 and took my step 1 on 5th March 2007. Yet waiting for the results. That not withstanding I have the follwing two things to say: 1, Keep your reading materials to a minimum. Even if you read a lot you will not remember at the end. You are at an advantage over freshers since you now have a clinical prespective. Do questions...A lot of my questions were directly from kaplan q bank. Do your first aid. Keep a small time frame. I went on and on for two years unnessecarily. At the end did not do me any good. 2. Change your sign-on name ... That will make you more positive. (My sign on name is negative too... and that was a mistake). 2.

Guys, I have to say this first, DO NOT THROW ROCKS TO ME. IT'S JUST MY PERSONAL OPINION. Am I safe now? Ok. I think, if you are a male, my answer is "YES". You should try your best to do whatever you think it can benefit your family but not just amuse yourself. You should fight outside for your family, even if sometimes you don't want to do so. That is your responsibility. If you are a female with family and kids, my answer is "NO". Think about this, right now, you are 44 years old, 10 years to go through all the exams, residence..... Finally, you are a real DR., you are 54 years old. During the 10 years, your can not put your heart in your family and your kids, and the 10 years, they need you mostly. Because right now, they are maybe just teenagers, a very dangerous period. As a wife and mom, I still believe family and kids are much more important than myself. But if your kids are old enough, don't need you to spend time and put all your heart to regulate them, you absolutely should do it. At least try it, otherwise, you will regret. Personal opinion.

One 4 years old boy. He's in preschool. I work part time every afternoon. Have a wonderful hubby, who can teach and control our son and cook for himself and our son. Right now, my son can write all the alphabets and numbers. We are teaching him the simple math, like 1 + 1 now. The education here is really bad. He should be able to caculate 15+ 15, write simple words and read books by himself when he is 5 years old. But it seems like the teachers here don't teach kids those stuff. He likes painting, maybe we are going to seek a teacher for him. I study during the daytime and when I am working. No study at all during weekend, that's the family time. Doing all the cleanings roughly during my son's one hour bath time. Reading stories and painting pictures with my son before he goes to bed. Teaching mathematics is my hubby's reponsibility. Having been preparing for the step 1 since Augest, 2006. Planning to take the exam at the end of 2007. About myself. I just had my 30 birthday. English is not my native language, and I learned medicion in my native language. I went to the elementary school when I was 5 years old, went to my medical school at 17 years old, graduated from medical school 8 years ago. Yes, in our country, we went to medical school after high school. Why? Because we learned enough in high school, did't need 4 years education before attending the medical school. we studies at school 14 hours everyday, no matter where you live, I mean at the school or at home. We had 8 hours class time with teachers to learn new stuff and 6 hours self study time with teachers supervision to review them. Not like students here, they only stay at school half day. And like all of the other countries, only top students could get enrolled in medical school. I believe everybody here is smart enough to pass the USMLE, because we were smart enough to be a medical student and to survive. Any more questions?

Dear Oldmed, I just found this post, am I too late, hope I'm not. Never give up as lady or not. Most of here old grad are mostly lady. We give enough Full time for the family & they understand. GO FOR IT, if you still have Dr. in your heart before really late like 65 y.o. Even some 62 yr old in north has try & get the residency. Do not know about the state. But USA is the land of opportunity, place that least, or no age discrimination, compare with north only want young fresh grad just out of the school next day. Are you the same as oldschool visitting my thread . I am shwe. But now has longer name due to old name clitch here, & cannot log back in. 1st at all, I am saying things open & in sincere way ,not in way of put other down , with anger etc. So in my thread , I do encourage oldschool, to change name 1st for the start. Oldschool never came back. I am so sorry if he take it hard, though it is my sincere way to get positive mood , environment 1st. Same as others here, if you like can change or add your name longer like mine... oldmedfor99. No pressure, just to lift up your motivation, mood when ever you see your name, does not matter 99 or not but definately , if you study right, hard , will get it. Child, teen age or not, child go to school , you go to library or kaplan or study home. Need resources look for prep journal topic is "my prep". or just ask for help some one will be here for you. Start your prep journal or join any journal you feel make you study, & help you too. There is big group, alot in both prep journal or study partner for step 1. Try to read positive post, not go for exam till your sure by doing Kap Q bank in 75% if aim for 99. Also NBME should be good enough , check the exam thread for correlation or ask. Make sure at least read all kaplan LN, dvd, Q book, Q bank, Goljian etc. Since try 2 times, am sure you will have the all materials. Try Q in mix & time, may be you know everything but stress out at exam. I have alot of med school friend like that, some even stay behind for yrs cause of their anxiety, worry, though they study hard, know every thing, but brain block at exam. 44 y. o . it is not old at all , ie the age all IMG try to sit for exam usually. Compare with recent grad, you are mature easy to deal with than young too proud fresh med grad, more clinical experince , even now out of practice for long. Old time , every where in the world, med school are better, less student, best teacher , most hands on experinces from cadaver dissection of the body in anatomy to patients in ward to your houseman ship training. Ok, will never end if say more old time. USA education for any child, age, school, to good, bad all depends where it is. But also the child itself too. As parent we try best in our limit of financial etc, the out come we'll guide them , pray hard too, but children here are very independent & they should be, just do not have to be out of bound. You need more help Mytime, Oldkid, NewN Lost & their buddies are all there. Good group, can ask guide to even how, what to study. Click their name on, will guide you to their threads. Oldkid, me, Mytime are senior gard too. Age is just the number. Keep fit, stay young, will look young & with flying color, positive smile face, you will win the residency. Oh do read my meghgi, & isther [ look for his CS post & related link name he had mentioned] posts too. http://www.prep4usmle.com/forum/thread/31207 http://www.prep4usmle.com/forum/thread/34699 Ok, oldmedfor99 , here my time to rest, but cannot help it. Do not give up, Drs are still practicing in their mid 80 in good shape even in speciality. If you love primary care, go for Int Med, Fam Med, Ped any or even psych is not bad, will not have much on call , good life style, now even young grad are looking into it. alot of my old consultant teachers are already done & are parcticing, they have their exam after early retired in their you know the age. Most choose to go back to primary care, better life style though not their previous speciality. If thereis a will there is a way, together helping supporting hand, we'll all be there as MD, USA. Open up your book, kaplan one & start reading. All the best & good luck, pray for any that you believe. For me I will pray for all , even the angles , but will do hard work too. GL GL GL happy success study p.s... women stay home, look after kids , doing house stuffs, do nothing are not in 21st century or in North America, not even in any where I think. Life just have to be balance in all ways, your Dr job with your family. Ask their support especially mental, social , emotional. A lot pass exam with 1st or 2nd or 3rd preg, but without support, find support before go for more children. , just a joke.

Go read in forum not only here but yahoo good Drs forum, visit the kaplan centres or live or book store or library and go to see IMG communities. Not reading at any where, reading is just reading re; age related to passing, low or high score, residency or not . Any one can write any true or false. I only belive if I see it with my eyes or know the person from seniors even recently has just passed with flying color. I did make mistake by listening, hearing so & so , like age, school, country, race, GC or not , even discourage by those including family, sibs, relatives, class mates. What did he do recently passed exam low 80, in residency , but still discourage us , not to do it. But is only him. The whole IMG , old or new friends , teachers/consultant most are in the system, some still trying , all still encourage us to go for it. The consultants back home are doing their exam at much later age than 44 y.o. Even in USA between mid 40 & above are trying or passing or in the residency in the past, or not long ago & still. Not from rumors , from friends & people around are proving . Some of them passed with 80 & above, some or most very high 91 to 99 , & they are senior then us . So some said grad at 2001 or later , mention as old grad, it is a joke & demoralize , discourage the experince seniors . Just do not want any one to get wrong idea that it is too late [ that what I thought long ago with not being early 20 something like just out of med school , but my consultant woke us up saying , his friends age when they tried the exam & residency ] cause of their age . But after all , all up to individual to what to do , to believe , to behave as look young or old and to pursue the MD dreams in USA or not . Do not forget net working , be postitive , active, & pray & ask for best of luck too. GL GL GL happy success study to all of us
