Hey BBB would you consider externship under a pvt practitioner in US as USCE

How valuable are LOR's from such a person esp if we are of the same ethnic background.

Should we try getting LOR's from only univ prof's.

Danke vielmals!

1. Yes, it's clinical experience.

2. It's going to more or less depend on the content of the letter more than the origin of the subject or letter writer.

Observership is where you get to watch the doctors employed in the hospital, while they do their thing. You are not authorized to touch the patient. This is also known as 'shadowing', which is a self-explanatory term.

Externship, however, is where you are allowed to examine the patient, but of course all treatment modalities will be decided only by your supervisor. You may get to do some small procedures [apart from minor things like drawing blood etc] in externship, if you are lucky to get a good superviser. Usually lasting 3-6 months, depending on your budget, at the end of your externship, you get a LoR from your supervisor[which is of great value while matching for residency].

And, yes, externship does carry more value than plain observership. But, observership is advisable compared to nothing.

Concerning how to go about getting an externship, can anyone throw some light on that? I'm in the dark myself.

Thanks and Cheers.
