history of sandfly bite +.The incubation period is two to eight weeks, although longer periods have been noted. The disease begins as an erythematous papule at the site of the sandfly bite on exposed parts of the body. The papule increases in size and becomes a nodule. It eventually ulcerates and crusts over. The border is usually raised and distinct. There may be multiple lesions, especially when the patient has encountered a nest of sandflies. The ulcer is typically large but painless unless there is secondary bacterial or fungal infection.
pentavalent antimony is the treatment of choice.
cutaneous leishmaniasis does not precede kala azar,theres post kala azar dermal leishmaniasis actually which appears as multiple skin lesions.
Miltefosinh is the latest drug for treatment.
prevention by sprayin n avoidin insect bite but avoidin exposure at night n dawn ...not sure abt that!

Brazil is in South America and New World species of leishmania are endemic in some areas. Leishmaniasis is transmitted by sand flies.
Preventing being bitten by using insect repellents and avoiding skin exposure at dawn and dusk is important in the prevention of infection from leishmaniasis.
Cutaneous leishmaniasis does not progress to kala azar (visceral disease).
Cutaneous leishmaniasis is difficult to treat and patients should be referred to specialist Tropical Medicine centres. Intralesional stibogluconate is often the drug of choice
