a friend of mine got an post scramble iv for FP cat on H1B. but he really likes to get Surg. cat next year. he got good scores on S1/2/3.

supposing he gets the FP this year, how can he switch and take the MATCH next year for a cat. Surg. i mean if the program starts in June and ERAS opens up in Sep:

1- how can he ask his PD in the FP for a LOR ? in other words, how can you explain to him after about 3-4 months that : "hey i didn`t want the FP in the first place and can you give me a LOR for this year`s MATCH for surgery?" !!!

2- How can he get some time off during the iv season? i mean how can he JUSTIFY the leave?

3- if he doesn`t match again next year in surgery, can he take the match the year after? (2 years from now)

your help is really appereciated.

I dont think its as easy to switch as ppl make it out to be........even the visa sponsorship letter states that they discourage anyone to change specialty.

I wouldnt advice your friend to go into a field which is not of his/her choice.

1. I don't understand how applicants can ask for a letter in September, but they do every year. Some find positions. Some sign the contract for the following year with their tails tucked under the white coats.

2. Time off - it's called vacation. That would be the only justifer.

3. He can try two years out, but it's going to be harder and harder.
