My husband did not match, but scrambled into a prelim surgery spot.
How likely is it with great performance that he can stay with this program and will not have to re-match for next year?

Preliminary surgery do not usually encourage you as for having a chance to stay in that particular program for PGY2, BUT if your husband show real interest and really outstanding work during prelim, as well as make good connection with faculty, it is very possible they can convert his prelim appointment into categorical surgery residency.
It has happend before, and I know personally 2 gyus who managed to do that. It is though not very common, the PD at the prelim surgery spots where I had interviews, told us that the conversion rate of prelim intern to PGY2 is probably not more than 10% - 1 intern from 10....
Good luck!

yes, and by law they have to notify him about contrac extention before November, so he has to impress people in the first 3-4 months. If he will not receive the notification of extension by November of the prelim year, he has to go through the Match again.
