According to the best of my knowledge it is better if one is certified on 1st September of the yr U apply, but some do make it without that too.

Something I realise I should hold on to ,"a good dignified attitude " while I was interviewing.. An excerpt from Hillary Duff while responding to some issue echoes that and am pasteing it here for you guys and especiallly to remind me of what I have to change in myself.

" "I don't insinuate that I have a ton of dignity -- come on, I'm 19 -- but it's something I strive to possess and important in how you treat others, how you handle your job and treat yourself," she says. "It's also something that can be easily lost. I hope I can hold on to dignity as I move forward."

So lets do that guys ........

Hi,
I did not match, had 2 interviews. trying to improve my Cv. Can you help me with a suggestion.

I was told Step3 matters for selection, is that true? Please let me know .i do not have time to study for step3 now unless it is necessary.

we are all going to get into a program.

Thanks

  #41

We are in the same boat! Thank you all for the support group, I don't feel alone any more!

I am going for the IM/Pedi/FM match in 2008. My background: 6 year from graduation by 2008, IMG from China, 95/97/pass/EAD/2.5 months observership in US/no research or publication. I am working on my LORs and step 3 exam, I hope I can get more USCE after the exam to get stronger LORs. I don't think the LOR I get (hopefully) from previous observership will help a lot, it is a soso letter. Another important issue for me is English, so much work to dosticking out tongue

To feda: for step3 score, if you don't have any problem with visa, usually it is not required at the time of match; however, I have seen it from other forums that some programmes make it a requisite for IMG of more than 5 years from graduation. However, I never checked at any programme, not sure if it is true.

Hey zhaoju2000,

if you are going for different specialties you should consider writing a separate personal statement for each specialty so you'de better start soon because each statement can take some time to write. Having graduated 6 years ago I'm assuming that you already completed a residency in China. If yes, then be prepared to answer why you want to change to a different specialty (peds, im, fm). Try to get that strong U.S. LOR, it will help. 2.5 months of US observership may not be enough so try and get more along with US research/publication. Some research positions will allow you to do clinical observation at the same time so that's a plus. If english is a problem definitely start working on that now. You don't have to speak perfectly bec. programs understand that img's will have an accent, but you need to speak clear and be able to express yourself and hold a conversation. Your scores are great so that will help you get iv's but it seems that overall credential are becoming more important that just scores alone.

Good luck to you and everyone...remember sept. will come around faster than you think so start now.

  #43

Oh, by the way, if your LOR's are from Dr's in different specialties from that which you will apply to, that may not do you as good (ex. peds LOR for a IM program)

And, USCE/research/observ. should be somewhat related to the field/specialty that you are interested in or plan to apply to (Radiology res. may not help if you are applying to dermatology)

  #44

HI, mvat, thank you for your kind reminder. I can't just rely on my scores. I think I will try some local medical groups to see if any MD will kindly offer observership to me. As for the research, since I have no background on it at all, it will take a while for me to get on the track, so I will keep it a last resort.

In the last 2 years, I spent most of my time studying at home, now it is time for me to go outside and talk to people. Now I volunteer in a local hospital (not medicine related though), hope it will help with my language.rolling eyes

Hi guys!

i guess you can count me in too. I'm still waiting for the scramble interview result, but am thinking about match 2008 as a most likely option for me.

my credentials:2002 grad, 79/93/cs passed,ECFMG certified,6 months observership(very long time ago).

the question is: what needs to be done to improve our chances this year in compare with the last one?

perhaps-PS,maybe stronger LORs. is Step 3 helpful?

Hi Guys,

The response to this thread has been fantastic!! I just finished my Day 2 of Step 3 today and feel drained..But we should march forward!!! Let us keep in touch on the forum!! I also prefer direct emails because it takes a long time to find each topic and scroll down to every response!! So if anyone prefers email that works as well..The other thing is to use specific threads for 2008..just the the support list..there will be a PS list, observership hospital list and so on..
feel free to leave messages for me!!

  #47

Hi, docdockart: Congratulations for your step 3 done!

How does the "email" work for our group? Whenever a new post comes up, everyone of the group will recieve a message in their email box? Is that what you mean? How to make it work?

  #48

Hi zhaoju,

You get a notification only if someone sends you a private message. Exchanging email addresses on the forum is not permitted!! Any general question can be posted here. Private information is usually sent out in PM's!
Your credentials are fantastic..you shouldnt have problems getting interviews!!

Good luck to you all going to the next match... A friend of mine showed me this site that he found, it seems that it has a very interesting point of view of the whole residency process...hope any of you find it useful for your next match.
