Hi guys, I need some help here. I wanted to know what my chances are for this years match. I know no body can be accurate, but your responses help me think about what and how to go ahead and plan.
I am an IMG, graduated in 2002,I passed step 2 CS and I am waiting for my step 1 result, which hopefully I will be receiving in a month's time. I have not taken step 2 CK, studying for it though. So I am not ECFMG certified and I need visa. I am doing my observership, its been a month and I have volunteered in a research lab and hence can get a good LOR from there, So if I apply for the 2008 match this september ( hopefully can get a LOR from the hospital where I am doing my observership by september as then it will be about 3 months), what do you think my chances are? do I have any slight possibility of getting into a residency in IM or I will just be wasting money?
second situation : all of the above + step 2 CK by the end of september and apply for the match by the end of october as soon as I get my step 2 CK score, then what will be my chances?
I know there is going to be a lot of predicition needed guys...but still..as I said it would give me a rough idea on what to expect and what to do.
Thanx and GL to all of you for this year's match.

Hi Friends,

I am not going to ask you for my chances for this match. Instead i am gathering advice from experienced members about applying wisely.

first My credentials.

1.I grad in 2001 but degree date 2002 so somehow i am still in 5 yr cut off.

2.Scores 92/94 first attempt. Cs result expented mid aug.

3.After grad i have huge gap till 2006 when i took my Step 1. In terms of USCE, I have volunteered in Free Medical clinics once a week for 3 months. (I take history and examine, expecting a LOR from this place soon)

4.An observership at a pvt physician office (a neurologist) this month. Expecting a LOR from her too! So basically just 2 USLOR, 3 LORs from my home country

5.A Psych Externship lined up in Aug (Not expecting a LOR because they require us to work 6 mon before we get anything although i will still mention it in my USCE)

6.GC

Now i am really interested in IM or Pathology. But Godforbid if i couldnt get those two, i will take FM or Psych (i dont want to stay home another year).

Should i even bother applying to IM or PATH university programs? How should i select programs and how many from each specialty should do. As you all know applying to 4 specialties will be expensive, Considering the cost i am trying to apply effectively.

My target areas are either Texas or Ny, Nj, Ct, MD, VA, PA.

Anyone with the same scenario wants to team up?

The list of programs for observership/externship.

Chandler Medical center, Lexington, KY
DC General Hospital, Washington, DC
Duke Hospital, Durham, NC
Elmhurst Hospital, Queens, NY
Emory University Griffin Hospital, CT
Harbor Hospital, Baltimore, MD
Jackson Park Hospital, Chicago, IL
Meridia Huron Hospital, East Cleveland, OH
Providence Hospital, Washington, DC
VA Medical Ctr., Washington, DC
University of California, San Francisco, CA
University of Miami, Miami, FL
University of Texas,Houston Medical School, TX
Wayne State University, Detroit, MI

MSPE is the new name for the dean's letter....same thing...get the guidelines in aamc.org. They changed the name because it is not like an LOR but more like the name says a performance evaluation throughout medical school from you dean's office...that's it. See ya!
For Sarika and USMLE99 I guess I'm in a similar situation...predicting is difficult but I do know that there is nothing wrong in trying...just try to appply to IMG friendly hospitals plus your choice for residency is a good choice for IMG's so I say go for it...anyways if you don't try it you'll end up thinking what would've happen' if you had....Take care and GL!!!nod

Azygous your plan is great!!! It's a very good time to send your complete application don't worry about being a little more late because it's not!! And it is always better to send a complete application. By the way, once you sent your diplomma to ECFMG how long does it take to get your certificate?

I think i'm asking this question again but what to do with Deans letter.

I got a letter from my Med college which says "principal's letter of recommendation". This is the letter i am going to use as Dean's Letter as i dont think my college will make a MSPE or even a deans letter.

How do i make sure the Eras use it as Deans letter and not scan it as one of the others LOR's?

Thank You.

Just Found this! seems like cover sheet isnot reqd for unwaived LOR.
LoR Cover Sheet/Instructions for letter writers* Cover sheet not necessary if you already have your LoRs PDF, 1 page 07/2007 Download

But This is whats written on ERAS document Submission form!
ERAS® Document Submission Form Instructions: Please submit this form each time you submit ERAS supporting documents, including: original MSPE, print photograph (if digital photograph is not submitted on-line via OASIS), original Letters of Recommendation (LoRs), and copy of medical school transcript. For LoRs, please be sure to list the names of the letter writers in the grid provided below. Please indicate whether you have waived your right to view your LoR(s) on the “Request for Letter of Recommendation/Cover Sheet,” which must accompany all LoRs. The cover sheet can be

Hi Sarika,

Just send it !! That works

Bye

WR

  #261

thanks GLO MD..once your all scores are reported S1 S2CS and S2CK, ECFMG send you the certificate...i dont think you have to send your diploma again ( i had my credientials verified by ECFMG long back)..correct me if I am wrong..

and sarika ...you will need a separate letter form ur Med school saying its a MSPE letter. If not ECFMG with write a neutral letter for you saying it is MSPE. the principals letter you are saying will be counted as a LOR from your dean and not as a MSPE...

I hope I am right...

I am thinking about buying that programs list from Match a resident. It says its a customized list, according to the criteria you provide, like ur yr of grad, credentials etc but before going ahead and doing it i want get an opinion about it. Is there anyone who has used it and found it useless.

On the otherhand, i can email all the programs in the states i am interested in and ask questions which would eat up alot of my time. what say you?

Got a "Best Buy" list from "fmgfriendlylist," turns out there's a similar (if not better) at:
http://www.network54.com/Forum/156284/viewall-pag...

Hope some of you guys could save a bunch of money. But anyone who did compile a list, could you verify the list above, please? Anyone who did use that list, what is your experience? Thanks a lot!!!

I was an applicant for the eras 2007. I had requested the return of documents through RODS after the match results. I shall be applying again for 2008.

1) Please do let me know what documents I need to resubmit for ERAS 2008 if any.

2) I am an IMG and my medical school does not provide me with MSPE. I have been provided with a deans letter detailing my study there.would that be enough. I think it is though !!

3) Can I use my previous aamc id?

  #264

No bear that is not a good idea. I know people who have wasted money on such lists. Just another internet scam !!!!

  #265

Well, too late for me sad Just hope that others won't fall for the same trap. I did a small search on the author Dr. Woo Ming and he seems to be a good doctor.

I just want to let you know...

This forum has a lot of members each year. And every single one did a search on his/her own. Why can't we co-operate, say each one research for programs' criteria at certain region, then pool the results to create a final database. That will help us and help those like bbb, too. Btw, thank you bbb for your continuous support for those like us! God bless you. smiling face

That's what i think - anyone want to join for OBGYN programs search? there are 247 programs out there, according to FREIDA

It's a good idea re bear's , that we all cooperated & team for the programs search at your region & region you're interested , then team up to post at each speciality under sub-topic of the each region .

That will save time , same for all st , books, Q bank , Q , topics, visa , IMG friendly, J or H visa , & living condition for apt, hotel, for weather, schooling, transportation , air fare or coach, train best way to go there , etc .
Hopefully we will be organized like that in v. near future .

I tried to type it because my handwriting is terrible sad But I think if you can write it clearly enough for the analyst to read, that will be fine.

So there's the same ole' question again as to which list to buy !!!

  #272

whiterabbit...

answer to your questions....me too in the same boat...

1)I did not use the RODS last time....so my oasis account says that my mspe, transcript and photo are on their record...so will send in the lors again and fill up the caf. If you had requested the return of all ur docs then i guess u would have to send them in again.....jus check out oasis or call them up

2) i too hav the deans letter and am goinna use it again this year/....not a problem in my opinion

3) oh yes....the aamc id remains the same....wat a relief that is!!!! hehe

gd luck

Dear bbb and all,

<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

I have some questions about LOR please.

I had my MD and PhD in my home country and am currently working as a postdoc in US. I can get LOR from all following people. Which letter should I use:

1. My medical professor, knows me well, strong LOR

2. My PhD advisor, MD, knows me well, strong LOR

3. My postdoc boss, MD, knows me well, strong LOR

4. An big shot physician, knows me, but not very well, agrees to provide LOR, but I do not know what he will write

5. Second-year resident in a university hospital, former colleague, knows me well, strong LOR

Another question is: dose the time of application matter that much. The big shot is out of town. I do not think I can meet 8/1 if I wait for his LOR. Thank you in advance and good luck to everybody!

  #275

regarding lors , does one have to send the originals or will the copy do?

and does it have to be in any other color except black as all my lORs are in black.
