Hi everyone,

I was matched in FM in a good program but it was like my last backup choice. I had Internal medicine as my first choice but I didnt get it. Now I dont really know if I should go to FM. Cause I dont know if I'm gonna be happy cause there are alot of older peeps in FM and I am pretty young.

My dilemma is can i not accept the match? wait till next year or just go thru with this FM residency?

any help or suggestions?

my did you apllied for FM? and why did you rank this prg at all?

man, this sucks. lots of people would love to do FM, its a great speciality.

you say its a back up. i think you should take it then and do it. you are pretty young and the others are old, so what?!?

my 2 cents on this

i think uhave to abide by match rules n take the position

u can probably change later

u cannot leave the postion unless u get a waiver from nrmp

If you didn't FM why did you rank it then?

dont take it the wrong way guys, I like it but I just wanted to do internal medicine. I am greatful that I got this. When i say I young and others might be old i meant it in a way that I wonder if im gonna get along with them. I ranked it because it was just my backup. I will do it dont worry. Is it possible to switch to IM next year?

i think that your reasoning is sooooooo incredibly immature...who told you that you have more chances to get along with "younger" population? how you are going to do is entirely up to you and your attitide toward people, how they perceiv you is only reflection of your own
be mature and act accordingly
and off course....good lucksmiling face

thank you babydoc, i appreciate your advice and I do intend to make the most out of my opportunity. who knows i might end up loving it and staying in it all together. but can anyone tell me if its possible to switch to IM next year if i wanted to?

Docinsitu, don't regret what you get. There is still a chance to change specialty next year. Being with older people on FM doesn't always mean something bad. Maybe you'll get more experience there.

Just be happy wherever you're in. Good luck!

I wonder what would your post say had u not matched at all...i think it would read something like this "bboohooo...i didnteven match in FM...oh my god!....i'd kill anyone to get a FM position!!...why is this happening to meee??!"

correct me if im wrong....

ya maybe you're right noxar. But i wouldnt have minded taking a year off to do research to improve my status next year.

So can someone please let me know if its possible to change from FM to IM next year?

i see what u mean...sorry if i sounded overly agressive....but then again...why would you apply for a program that you wouldnt be comfortable going to?..that's like the first rule of applying... the good news is that ure gonna be in good shape to switch to medicine next year..

...think about it this way, the way to improve ur 2008 application is by doing some residency training, that should pump ur chances up, peace.

I think you have to continue your residency. you will have one year usce then it will be advantage for you to get your internal medicine residency. regarding age difference: It is good to learn from them and adjust yourself accordingly.

THank you very much guys for all you help and excellent support. I feel much more at ease now and I'm planning to hit the ground running for my FM residency. Im actually alot happier now and I believe that GOD has a plan for everyone. Maybe this is the route that will make me more happier. Im taking it all in stride and I welcome the new responsibilities.

Hi,

Many people have "back-ups" and I think even though some people seem upset with you...don't sweat it..imagine if you had no backup..that would be bad. It will be very easy to switch to IM next year...because now you have experience in the US. Remember to apply early and some programs will even sign you out of the match that didn't interview you this year.
Congrats...and good luck on your IM dreams. By the way, unless you want to do a fellowship there is really no difference between a IM and FP practice.

kb has a point...

my boss is double boarded - IM & Peds...he says it is a 'glorified FM' practice...

good luck
