how hard is it to match the year after you did not match? and to all those that did match their following year, what did you do to improve your application? thanks, it will help us all.

I need to know if program directors find out that you did not match in the past season, and if that will be a negative aspect in your application or in your chances of getting a position!!! Which one you should put most of your effort in, USCE or research+publications? Thank you, btw I did not match this year. , but I will keep trying

Yes if you apply to the very same program, they will know. Preferably USCE than research+publications. Good luck!

It's not bad. Look at it by the good side, now you have the experience of the Matching process.

"I need to know if program directors find out that you did not match in the past season, and if that will be a negative aspect in your application or in your chances of getting a position!!!" I dont know if the ERAS system tells if you have been in the match before but last year (2006 match)I just had 3 interviews. This year(2007 match) I had 11 interviews out of which 2 of them were from the previous year's program. 1 of the program remembered me from the previous match and they exempted me from going through the entire interview process and said I need not come again and I will be directly considered for the match ROL. However I still went for a short meeting(they refused to call it an interview!)and met the PC(wonderful lady) and PD to discuss the latest development from my side. I really liked the program and would have ranked it #1 on my list.....however ended up signing a pre-match somewhere else. The sad part was that they didn;t consider me for a pre-match and only for the match. So for me it has been a positive experience.

No ERAS doesn't tell if you didn't match. The only way that they will know that you didn't match is 1. If they interviewed you and remember you name. or 2. If you tell them.

I din't match last year. Applied this year again and matched. I did apply to the same hospital. During interview PD asked me, 'did u apply to our programme last year'? I said yes I did. I matched to the same programme.

BBB Is it a good idea to let them know that u ha dinterviewed with them or applied at their program the previous yr and did not match. i can see soem positive and negative aspects..& dunno which will have a major influence or whatway the selection committe thinks: Positive is that it shows interest in teh program, since teh candidate has reapplied and mayeb even reappeared for the interview negative is, they might think what a loser didnt match nywhere last yr.....so not worth considering. what do u suggest?? Plz reply. Misty

I would only mention it if the Pd mentions it. If they ask, just say something like "Wow, with all the persons that have applied, I'm pleased that you remember me" and drop it. If you interviewed this year and they ranked you and just happened to fill before your name - you never can tell. It's boosted rank spaces before. Good luck

Hi BBB I have a question for you for next years match... I matched at Family medicine this year but I really wanted Internal Medicine because I want to specialize. Is it possible to switch from FM to IM after one year of doing FM? Will the IM programs dislike the fact that I am switching from FM to IM? and will it be a hinderance in their decision to accept me? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

docINsitu wrote: Will the IM programs dislike the fact that I am switching from FM to IM? and will it be a hinderance in their decision to accept me? Many PDs will want to know why you are changing. Many will ask that you have a LOR from your current PD prior to offering an interview. Figure out your story and stick to it. Good luck.

Hi bbb, How bad would it be if I use LORs from 2006 for applications this year (2007) ? How is it possible to get USCE? As I see it,USCEis "hands on" isnt it....so how do I get hold of that? Thanks.

According to what I have read in some of those successful Match guide books, letters not older than 2 years are fine.

I applied three times with my ECFMG certificate, and before that, twice without. In a way, even the obstacles I faced helped me out in the long run. Last year I was stuck without a plane ticket for returning to my country, and had very little money (as usual). I stayed for almost a month in a hostel, in a neighborhood I liked very much, while waiting for my trip back home. One day, walking by the hospital towards the public library (I was using their internet connection since I had no computer), I saw some hospital staff having a barbecue outside. They looked like a happy crowd. Then I applied there. I got six interviews out of 20 applications. My nr 1 choice was that hospital near the hostel. I got matched there. I jumped with joy when I saw the result. So never give up!
