On the first day of the scramble, no one picks up even if it rings continuously... On 2nd day, yes they'll do a favour to you, they'll pick up the phone and will say SORRY WE ARE FILLED.
In one of the program which had 2 prelim positions, I asked one of my friend who is a resident in that program, then my friend asked the co-ordinator about the same. ''Co-ordinator said YES THERE R 2, BUT THEY ARE RESERVED'' Wow I wished I had my dad as a PD or ANY OF MY RELATIVE AS PD OR PC...
GOOD LUCK GUYS, prepare for the next battle...

Heck, I thought that I was doing okay. I guess I sucked at answering the telephone all day and talking to applicants.

i honestly believe you love to help and comfort people. between this site as well as TALKING to applicants. for all your help thank you!!!! It would be so nice to hear a real voice on the other side. i have been callin places like crazy and i spoke to one person...and that was a wrong number hahahaha.
just a few more hours and its over and done...good luck everyone

Some people say it is not connection.
I called a program on the first day of scramble and they had 3 open position. The PC confirmed that they really have 3 open positions and she was so nice in answering my questions. When I asked how can I apply, she said "Give my your first name, last name, graduation date and medical school name. Our PD will call you for phone interview".
I said: "Don't you want to know my scores, visa status or anything else?
She said: "PD will ask about these things when he calls you later today or tomorrow. Please don't call back and we will definitely call you for interview".
Three days passed no phone calls. All three positions showed as filled yesterday.
Here is my question to people who think it is not about connection:
Why they did not call me? They didn't know my visa status (even I am a permanent resident) they didn't ask about my scores, not even my USCE. So, whey they did not call me back?
Here is my answer: Because they have people in their relatives and friends who need this position. They don't care about your knowledge or your score. ONLY CONNECTIONS.
This sucks.
In my country, we had this problem. I heard good things about US and that they respect humans rights. But you know what, that is all bull s.....t. There are no rights. It is only about $$$$$$$ and connections. THAT IS IT.
By the way, is there anybody without connection who made it into scramble?

Match is not about how hard you can work or what is your score. It is all about $$$ and Connections. Instead of doing research find somebody who knows somebody. You will be matched.

Those programs that are Univ/ Univ affiliated usually fill up with their own unmatched AMGs. Then, with AMGs those done rotations there. Then, AMG from other places, then ... then... then IMG with no visa issue and then other IMGs. Remember the matching rate for a medical school affects its overall performance rating, so those Deans who have unmatched medical students will work so hard calling programs on behalf of their students to find positions. Whom do we have, IMGs?! That's the reason, I've posted several times here that Scramble=Gamble, your chances of hitting the mega million lottery is greater than getting a position in scramble.

There were people WITHOUT connection got positions through scramble. BUT I know some AMGs who were successful in scramble. Again AMGs have advantages than IMGs....their deans/faculty put an extra effort to match those unmatched.
However, in the US connection is important. E.g., if you are recommended by somebody I know...then it will take out some uncertainty from the equation. Connection is helpful, but at the end everything depends on your peformance. Connection helps you in opening the doors, but then you are on your own either to thrive or to fail.
Connection can happen everywhere. If you are a nice person, it will very easy to connect with other people. E.g., with other parents in your kid's school, with somebody sitting next to you in the airplane, with a stranger while you are waiting for a subway etc. etc. You can always start a conversation with a stranger, then find out later that he / she might be a PD in a residency prog  . Who knows.
So...think positively...try to engage people next to you into a conversation, then you will amaze who they are. Good luck for your future.
