Interferons (IFNs) have demonstrated activity in infectious autoimmune diseases and selected cancers. Produced by the body in response to viral infections and tumors, and to regulate immunity, IFNs belong to the cytokine family of proteins. Three types of natural IFNs are produced: alpha, beta, and gamma. IFNs are classified according to cellular origin and the type of receptors they bind to. IFN alpha and beta are classified as type I since they bind to IFN cell surface receptors type 1; although they have different binding affinities, they have similar biological effects. IFN gamma is type II, since it binds only to type 2 receptors. Leukocytes produce IFN alpha fibroblasts produce IFN beta activated T-cells and natural killer cells produce IFN gamma
