The culture was Gm negative. A similar sample plated on mouse fibroblast cells and Giemsa stained, showed cytoplasmic inclusions containing minute cocci 2) A chinese-American undergraduate student noticed a large, red blotch on her leg. Two weeks ago she removed tiny deer tick from her body following a camping trip. Tissue biopsy showed spirochetes 3) Raw wool processor developed high fever and loss of concentration. Weil-Felix reaction on serum was negative. Serologic tests for agent of Q fever was positive 4) A new mother developed a high fever following the birht of her first child. Cord blood cultures were negative on blood agar but positive on Eaton's agar 5) Gm stain of uretheral discharge smear showed the presence of pink diplococci inside and surrounding PMNs. Oxidase-positive white colonies grew on Thayer Martin agar 6) 10 yr boy was diagnosed with meningitis. CSF showed no growth on blood agar. White colonies grew on choclate agar. Both X and V factors were required for colony growth. Gm stain showed rods 7) 19 yr college student described vaginal infection to her doctor. White colonies were recovered on blood and choclate agar. Gm stain showed variable cocobacilli 8) Several children in first grade developed diarrhea that lasted 2-5 days. One type of organism grew best under microphilic conditions. It was oxidase positive and showed curved rods in Gm stain 9) Bronchial lavage specimen from 56 yr man with pneumonia produced creamy white colonies on blood agar. On Endo agar, mucoid, stringy colonies were found, Gm stain showed rods with halos surrounding them 10) An abscess developed following abdominal surgery on an elderly female. Nothing grew on blood, nutrient or EMB agar. Abscess fluid plated on blood, nutrient and EMB agar grew no colonies. The specimen showed presence of cocobacilli. Identical media did produce colonies when incubated in a candle jar 11) A retired army sergeant contracted pneumonia a week after visit to Pennsylvania. Microabscess and inflammatory exudates developed as dis progressed. Bronchial lavages showed few pleomorphic thin rods, but cultivation on most media failed to produce any colonies
