A 22-year-old woman complains of mouth sores, a sore throat, vaginal discharge, fever, and myalgia. She has no other medical problems. She takes oral contraceptive pills. She is in a monogamous relationship and she reports that she uses barrier contraception. Her temperature is 38.3 C (101.0 F). Physical examination reveals cervical and inguinal lymphadenopathy, exudative pharyngitis, multiple ulcers on the labia and cervix, and a vaginal discharge. Gram staining of the vaginal discharge shows many neutrophils. Which of the following is the most likely diagnosis? A. Chancroid B. Condyloma acuminatum C. Herpes simplex virus D. Lymphogranuloma venereum E. Syphilis
