I am currently on a 1 year hiatus from being a student and I am getting mentally bored - I am starting med school in August. In the meanwhile, what is a good way to "understand" the USMLE step 1? I was able to get my hands on the KAPLAN 8 book series. Is this complete enough to understand provided that they are lecture notes? Should I go for the 4 volume KAPLAN edition? Thanks guys!

The best way to "understand" for step 1 is to do well in your first 2 years of medical school. I dare venture to say that it's too early for you to start worrying about the boards...my advice to you is to do some things that you will not be able to do once school starts. Read some books, travel, create something, whatever. You will have no time for much other than studying once your program beings in August...so, enjoy the coming months as a normal person (meaning, a non-med student)!
