Kaplan Qbank USMLE

I didn't do very well during my first 2 years of medical school. I admit that my poor performance was mostly due to a lack of discipline. However, I regret not working harder because now I feel I'm at a disadvantage concering studying for the USMLE. I'm not aiming for a great residency or anything like that. However, I want to do well for personal reasons and prove to myself and my family that I'm capable of doing something great. I'm willing to make the sacrafice and work hard but I would like some advice before I undertake this journey.

Knowing my background, what advice can you give to me? My plan as of now

1 Read First Aid 3 times
2. Read Goljan Radpid Review 2 times
2. Do 5,000-10,000 questions (includes Q-bank)
3. Read Kaplan Lecture Notes once

Do you think this is sufficient to get a 240? If not, what more should I do.

I realize a post like this might give the impression I'm arrogant. I apologize if I'm giving that impression. I'm just trying to be straightforward and candid so that I can receive the best advice possible. I have read many of the stories here and I'm very inspired and proud of so many of the students on this forum. I would like to be one of you and hopefully contribute to this great forum.

good luck rahul with your preparation for this exam and i also hope u enjoy it as it will only bring in better results...your plan sounds good...one thing i can say is stick to one source of study material and repeat it many times over...have faith in your study material and yes do lots and lots of questions which yu do have a plan for...so good luck and i hope yu do well and make yourself proud.

Hi Rahul,

You should first try to see where you stand. Have you taken some sort of pretest or diagnostic test? Do that to see where you are strong, and what areas to concentrate upon. And take it from there. I thought my weak area was immunology because I did so poorly on class exams. It turned out that those exams were too difficult or poorly written, and that my basic understanding was just fine (per Kaplan Qbook...immuno questions on UW are another story altogethersmiling face).

I agree with obgyne2b, you need to do a test to see where you stand and from there design your prep plan. You are in a disadvandage postion if you didn't apply yourself during med school because that should be when you get to learn the concepts and really understand them. USMLE put heavy emphasis on concepts and the utility of them, and if you didn't understand them even after doing 10000 questions you are still very unlikely to answer the 10001 question, because you that question is new to you and not knowing the concept won't grant you the correct answer.

My suggestion is to do a test and see where are your weak points and start from there. Kaplan might not be sufficient and you might go back to textbooks to get the whole story in order to understand.
