Hi ppl

I have given USMLE Step 1, 2 and CS. I plan to apply for a residency in Internal Medicine in 2008. My scores in Step 1 and 2 are 91 and 78 respectively and I have cleared Step 2 CS.

I would be applying in September this year. Should I give STep 3 before applying? Does a good score in step 3, help in getting interview calls? Or is step 3 just for H1-B visa? Does Step 3 help in anyway in getting interview calls? Will it help in strengthening my current profile?

Please help .. Please let me know whatever you know about this .. Thanks a lot...

Step 3 is important for those who need an H1b visa - it's not a consideration for interviews (at least in the program where I work)

ear bbb,
Hai, I was reading your post since last many days,I wanted to ask you some ques.First let me tell you something about myself.I am a old IMG. i did my graduation in 1986, My MD in 1990 in OBGYN from India.I gave my USMLE step 1&2 in 93/94. At that time the scores never used to go so high. I got 78/75/ Didnot apply for residency due to family reasons. Came to USA 5 mths back. I thougt that my ECFMG certification has expired so I joined KAplan and wanted to give step 1 and 2 to improve my scores. When I contacted ECFMG for verification of my credentials, I was shocked to hear that the policies have changed in 2004 and my ECFMG certificate is still valid.I was happy and said at the same time because I could now apply for residency and sad because i could not improve my scores.I have to give CS, but I can apply for the 2008 match.I wanted to ask you that does such a long practical experience and commitment to your subject balance the low scores.I have worked as consultant for 16yrs and a very good vaginal surgeon.Do the programme director give weitage to this. How can we let them know all this because if you are not called for interview seeing your low scores than their is no way to convey them all this. Please reply. i gather from your post that you are in the coordinator to the programme director

i think step 1 and 2 scores are valid for 7 years so u can retake the exam and get better scores. and contact ecfmg asap. they wud know best. u still have time to give exams. but if u havent started prep yet i'd say go for 2009 with highest scores possible. being an old grad is a big minus too. u need at least 4-5 months per step and these days people dont get calls without both steps with good scores. unless u want Fm in which case u can try this year .
