Also, I have applied for USMLE Step3 , I will be taking it in mid April. IS it late to take Step3 now? Please help. Thanks. #1 - you don't need Step 3 for a J1 visa - so don't worry about that. BUT - Programs are resident dependent to take care of patients in the hospital and only the program that you match with will know if they can wait for you or not. If they have a certain number of interns who will have late visas, they don't have to wait for you. p.s. I am calling the NRMP to see if they have a policy on this....

I am taking Step3 for H1 just incase the program where I match says that they cant wait for me till July end to get a J1 visa. Also, what do you mean by "If they have a certain number of interns who will have late visas, they don't have to wait for you.". Please explain. Thanks.

You are trying to start late - say 2-3 or 4 other interns out off 10-12 or even 20 interns are having the same trouble. The program won't be able to cover their in-patient services if they have a number of interns starting late.

Is it late if I take Step3 in mid April. I won't be ready for the exam before that.

That is going to depend on the program that you match with. All of your questions can't be completely answered until you know where you will be working.

NRMP's policy on late starts leaves it up to the individual programs. If we match with a candidate and they can't start within the parameters that a program decides, the program would contact the NRMP with the information and the match can be voided. Remember, when you are interviewing and matching, it's assumed that you will be able to get a visa that will allow you to start residency in a timely manner. Good luck.

I called the ECFMG and they said that they process the applications for form DS2019 as late as in the month of July and August every year. That means there are a lot of people who begin their residencies late.
