Hi guys

I am posting for a friend, who is an IMG student awaiting match results when she received an email from NRMP stating that she was withdrawn from the match as ECFMG did not have all of her test results...She has her step 1 and step 2 CK scores and was waiting for her Step 2 CS scores to be reported after March 28. Can she still scramble for unfilled positions? Will that list even be available to her? She had six interviews, two of which looks very hopeful and even contacted her after the interviews....Would she still have a chance at pre-match or scramble, if she explains to them that she will have her step 2 Cs scores by march and her ECFMG certification before she starts residency?

Some advice/ help in this matter would definetly be appreciated!

Hope this helps......................

The following information is currently posted on the ERAS website (http://ecfmg22.securesites.net/eras/) and provides more detail on what you can and cannot do during the scramble process:

National Resident Matching Program
The NRMP matches applicants with available residency positions. To participate, applicants must have met the NRMP's exam requirements, and the exam results must be available in time to participate.
For information on Match registration and requirements, visit the NRMP website.
NRMP Post-Match Scramble
This general information about the post-Match Scramble may answer most of your questions. Please be aware that the Scramble involves three different organizations:
• Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS), which operates MyERAS
• The National Resident Matching Program (NRMP, or "the Match")
• ERAS Support Services at ECFMG, your designated dean's office
All applicants who have not matched with a residency program may participate in the post-Match Scramble. If you have any outstanding fees with the AAMC ERAS or with ECFMG, you must make the necessary payment(s) to clear any outstanding balances; otherwise, you will be prohibited from participating in the Scramble.
The Scramble starts on Tuesday, March 13, 2007 at 12:00 noon and ends on Thursday, March 15, 2007 at 12:00 noon, Eastern Time in the United States. You may apply to any program with an unfilled position.
Apply as soon as the list of unfilled programs has been posted at www.nrmp.org at 12:00 noon, Eastern Time in the United States, on Tuesday, March 13, 2007. You will not have access to the list of unfilled programs if you did not register with the Match; refer to NRMP website for its policies. The Match Agreement prohibits applicants from sharing the NRMP's List of Unfilled Programs with individuals who did not register with the Match.
You may apply to a maximum of 30 programs during the two-day Scramble. There is no charge for applying to programs during the Scramble if you have registered with the NRMP. Any programs to which you apply after 12:00 noon, Eastern Time in the United States, on Thursday, March 15, 2007 will be charged at the regular rate.
If you have previously applied to a program with an unfilled position, contact the program to remind them that they have your application and request that they take another look at it. You cannot re-transmit your application.
Important Information
Regardless of whether you have or have not registered with the NRMP, you should not contact any programs before noon on Tuesday, March 13, 2007. It is important that you understand the terms and conditions of the Match Agreement; therefore, please read the agreement found on the NRMP website. Programs will take note of applicants who violate this Match rule and may report them to the NRMP. Programs as well as applicants are bound by the Match Agreement.
We also urge you not to engage services that, for a fee, purport to help you by flooding programs with unsolicited applications from multiple applicants, either by e-mail or fax. Instead of being helpful, in most cases they are detrimental to your application. Therefore, be sure to register with the NRMP by the late-registration/rank order list certification deadline. After having consulted the list of unfilled programs on Tuesday of Match Week, go to MyERAS and apply to some of those programs. Be sure to assign your LoRs and USMLE transcript to the programs, so that we can transmit them accordingly.
It is important to know that programs may participate in ERAS but not in the Match. The reverse holds true - programs may participate in the Match but may not participate in ERAS. You will need to research this information on your own.
ERAS Support Services at ECFMG during the Scramble
During the two Scramble days, we will login to the ERAS PostOffice several times each day to retrieve your document assignments and program lists. We will process those lists and transmit your documents shortly thereafter. You may change any information that the software will allow you to change. You may change the information in MyProfile and you may reassign personal statements and LoRs.
During the 48 hours of the Scramble, there is no time for manual processing. Your file must be ready for automatic processing by our system before the Scramble begins. That means:
• One week before the Scramble, you must apply to at least one program at MyERAS.
• If you are sending us new or replacement LoRs, we must have them one week prior to the Scramble. If you have a new or additional LoR, assign it to one of your original programs. This gives us time to attach it before the Scramble.
• If you are sending us a replacement LoR from the same writer, attach a note to it that reads, "This replaces the previous LoR." Otherwise, we might mistake it for the LoR we have already scanned and discard it without scanning.
• You must also make sure that all of your documents have been received and assigned, so that we can attach and transmit them before the Scramble.
• If you are planning to apply during the post-Match Scramble only, you must still apply to at least one program about one week before the Scramble.
• You cannot make changes to your CAF, however you can update your Profile at any time.

I hope your friend has kept a US address as the mailing address for the results.

  #4

Thank you for a very quick response Rabbit...she does have a US mailing address...and from the looks of it, she CAN scramble for unfilled positions..

Inorder to be part of match in NRMP you need to be ECFMG certified......didnt your friend know tht before registering for it?

Getting a place in scramble is very dificult and its even tougher when you're not ECFMG certified. Not so say tht its impossible but its certainly v. difficult.

  #6

scramble is very difficult for people who need visa. however if she dosn't need visa then she has a great chance.

  #7

Thanks guys for all your responses and thoughts...
Veer-Zaara...you dont need to be ECFMG certified to participate in the match...you just need to meet all the requirements for the certification and be certified by July the latest before you actually start the residency. She would have been ECFMG certified by June.

No, you're mistsaken maria, you have to be ECFMG certified to be part of the NRMP match.....the regulations are very clear.Even ECFMG recommends those going into the match to sit their usmle exams before 31st December so their results would be ready by end of Feb.....for the ROL deadline.

  #9

You r both right. To go in the match you have to meet all the requirement .That means that your cs results shoul be released.!!!.When your cs results are releasesd you ve met all the requirement .After that it takes up to 2 weeks to become certificate ( they do not certifiy you imediatly after you have the cs results resleased, for me it took 1 wk ).So you don t need t to be certified but you need your cs score released to go in the match.

No, razvandadu.....you have to be ECFMG certified. In fact once you register with NRMP.......NRMP then directly checks with ECFMG if you're ECFMG certified(usually takes 1 day)......if you're not certified by deadline(even if you did pass the CS exam)or NRMP was unable to confirm your ECFMG status by deadline then you're voluntarily made to withdraw from the match(even if you did pass your CS exam). Thats why NRMP also clearly states not to wait till last minute to register with them becoz they need sufficient time to verify your status with ECFMG.

check this out
The NRMP requires students and graduates of international medical schools to pass all examinations required for ECFMG® Certification before they can participate in the Match. To meet the examination requirements for ECFMG® Certification, applicants must satisfy the medical science examination and clinical skills requirements. Step 1 and Step 2 Clinical Knowledge (Step 2 CK) of the USMLE are the exams currently administered that satisfy the medical science examination requirement for ECFMG® Certification. The ECFMG® also accepts passing performances on certain former examinations to satisfy this requirement. Step 2 Clinical Skills of the USMLE is the exam currently administered that satisfies the clinical skills requirement for ECFMG® Certification. Applicants who have passed the former ECFMG® Clinical Skills Assessment (CSA®) and achieved a score acceptable to ECFMG® on an English language proficiency test (such as the TOEFL exam or the former ECFMG® English test) can use their passing performances on these exams to satisfy the clinical skills requirement.

The NRMP requires Fifth Pathway program students and graduates to satisfy the medical science examination and clinical skills requirements for ECFMG® Certification by passing USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK and CS (or their equivalents).

For additional information on these examination requirements, see Verification of Credentials for Match Eligibility on this website or visit the ECFMG® Web site.

Applicants who have not received their reports of performance for the required examinations may register for the Match with the NRMP. However, if by the rank order list deadline an applicant's examination results are not available and ECFMG® reports that the applicant has not met the examination requirements, the applicant will be withdrawn automatically from the Match.

NOTE: It is solely the responsibility of the applicant to complete the required exams in time to meet deadlines imposed by the NRMP and / or residency programs. Since the number of applicants seeking to complete these exams may exceed the spaces available in time to meet those deadlines, there is no guarantee that sufficient spaces will be available for all applicants to meet deadlines imposed by the NRMP and / or residency programs. Applicants are encouraged to apply for and take the required exams as soon as they are eligible.

Ok, assuming that you are withdrawn but will have passing results in all three exams in time for the Scramble, how can you get access to that unmatched list? Can you still somehow scramble into something even if you were withdrawn??

Basically my question is... can you get access to the unmatched programs list along with everyone else if you are withdrawn from the Match? There has to be a way...

  #13

You will still have access to the list of unfilled programs and be able to srcamble as long as you have registered with NRMP and applied to at least one programe through ERAS
