if ur an IMG i would recommend u to do ur step1 after clinical years or graduation! This way u will be able to connect clinical scenarios well with basic science concepts!

Hi yoga, I was in a similar situation as you. Review books did nothing for my class exams. Reading stuff like Cecils and Robbins did much more, plus the professor's notes. I have read posts on other forums of students totally focusing on Step 1 at risk of doing poorly in school...my take on that is this: if your school grades on Pass/Fail, then this is good advice. Just do the minimum to Pass and study for the step 1. If your school grades on letter grades and you have to get B grade or better to pass, then my advice is to focus on excelling in school and take the needed time off to focus on step 1. Some schools are set up where you have to pass step 1 in order to go on to clinicals. In this case, I would totally focus on step 1. Yoga, find the relevant topic in FA and make notes in it. This will help you save time when you being to prepare for Step 1. Don't stress if the FA concepts are not being explicitly taught in your school. If your school teaches lots of details, then you may be in a very good position for Step 1, since it seems to be going above and beyond what is in most review books these days!

hi obgyne2b. am i right in interpretating you..if u mean that..if the medschool grades us..(in my case marks out of 5 like 3/5,4/5,5/5 in each subject---inRussia)....and as such..since the highyeild subs for usmle are almost always low yeild for non-american schools(as far as i hve seen)....do u waant to say..for thesake of saving gud grades..one shud ...temporarily pay attention in medschool and get best grades...than studying for step1? .........coz..as i think..as in my case...solely studying for medschool in basic sciences subjets..wont even contribute 10%to the real preparation for step1....i.e. .....studying..those lowyeild subs..wud help only to get BETTER GRADES nd nothing for USMLE... so..wht exactly ppl like..yoga n lucky jack n hundreds in same confusion shud do!? ..... please suggest/

Hi, US and Carib schools, more or less, teach according to the US board exam. If you are a foreign student, your school probably teaches according to what the licensing board in your respective country wants you to know in order to pass the exam of your country. Please be aware that FA is a very succinct review. They leave out the small details because it is assumed that you were given those small details in your primary study during med school years 1 and 2. Time is a big factor as most US students only have 2-4 weeks to prepare for Step 1 after the semester ends. FA people know this. If you are using FA with your classes and find that your professors don't discuss the same topics, then that should be a clue to you to do your own reading on that topic if you are interested in USMLE. You will need more than FA, in my opinion. Use Kaplan lecture notes and anything by Dr. Goljan. If you can arrange these studies while you are in school, do so. If not, wait until you can dedicate full time. Also, try to study with others that are taking the USMLE, it may help.

obgyne2b =>thank u for ur tips & contripution i believe it is is good 2 have the review books & live in the atmosphere of usmle as pretest ppl say prepare early score higher any how; having review material helped me to got concentrated .. i noted that the boards ask about rare syndromes & stuff that i would never been asked in medschool about them but they are worth knowing but i still have the trauma of not doing will on medscool exams..i mean if i cant do will on medscool with the relative superficial covering what would i do on the boards up to this moment i still ask myself "HOW TO EXCEL IN MEDICAL SCHOOL?" help me ppl

Your usmle scores might be more important than your school marks. Clinical experience in the US is important plus letters from the attendings that were part of that experience. I am still a student, perhaps someone else with experience can post more information?
