Many bacteria are associated with commonly occuring illnesses. Routine microscopic analysis of cultures, in many cases, forms the basis for highly reliable preliminary diagnosis of infections. Match the following brief descriptions of bacteria structure and illnesses with the most commonly associated Gm negative and Gm variable bacteria A) Pasteurella multocida B) Proteus mirabilis C) Proteus vulgaris D) Pseudomonas aerouginosa E) Pseudomona pseudomallei F) Rickettsia prowazekii G) Rickettsia rickettsii H)Rickettsia tsutsugamushi i)Salmonella enteriidis J) Salmonella typhi K) shigella dysenteriae L) Shigella sonnei M) Treponema pallidum N) Treponema pertenue O) Ureaplasma urealyticum P) Vibrio cholera Q) Vibrio parahemolyticus R) Yersinia enterocolitica S) Yersinia pestis 1) 32 yr old man experienced diarrhea, cramps, and bloody, squirty stools following a business encounter gp session in a campsite area. STool specimen plated on MacConkey agar produced white colonies which Gram-stained as negative rods 2) A teenage boy developed a uretheritis and went to clinic. The Gm stain, choclate agar and blood agar were all negative. Specimen plated on Eaton's agar (supplemented with urea) produced minute colonies after 2 weeks incubation 3) A male hunter noticed a rash on his legs that spread to his hands. The first rash appeared where he had removed ticks after an outing in the woods. A serum sample was positive for all antigens in the Weil-Felix test. 4) A 12 yr boy stepped on broken glass and received medical care. Howerver he did not complete the follow up directions and the wound became infected. A lactose non-fermenting rod was isolated. It was resistant to many antibiotics 5) A women received a deep claw gush from pet cat. the wound became infected within 24 hrs. A fast-growing, oxidase-positive rod was isolated 6) A yound boy near Denver, Colorado, was playing with a dead prarie dog. Several days later he became sick and his condition was diagnosed as bubonic plague 7) The serum of a travelling salesman was positive in VDRL test and FTA-ABS test 8) Construction workers became sick with diarrhea, stomach cramps and vomiting. The isolate was lactose nonfermenting, motile and produced hydrogen sulfide 9) Bacteria from UTI priduced swarming colonies on blood agar but not on MacConkey agar. The isolate produced hydrogen sulfide, was urease-positive but not indole-negative 10) A refugee from India developed severe diarrhea which produced rich water stools with no accompanying blood. Comma shaped bacteria was isolated which grew faster under alkaline conditions 11) The retired army soldier had fever and headaches, symptoms which were similar to epidemic typhus he experienced years earlir. He had been confined to hospital nursing home for previous 4 years

1)L 2)b 3)g 4)d (im not complaining,but if this is psuedomonasthere are many charact eristics that would not neccesarily give it away) 5)a 6)s 7)m 8)j 9)b 10)p 11)f you are a tough customer!!
