what is the mechanism of poststenotic dilation of aorta in aortic stenosis?

  #2

Thickening of the aortic valve and mild asymmetric poststenotic dilatation of the ascending aorta result from repetitive trauma and vibrations from a subaortic jet of blood

  #3

Post-stenotic aortic dilatation is defined as dilatation of the vessel wall distal to the area of a partial stenosis. It refers to dilatation of the ascending aorta, >4.0 cm, distal to a stenotic/malformed aortic valve (AV).

does it mean that subaortic pressure cause postaortic dilation even aortic pressure is normal and stroke volume is diminished?

  #5

in aortic stenosis there is increased pulse pressure due to narrowing of the valve --> blood under increased pressure stresses aortic wall --> dilation over time

  #6

Post-stenotic aortic dilatation has been shown to occur in patients with AS/aortic regurgitation (AR), haemodynamically normal bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) and following aortic valve replacement (AVR). It does not appear to be related to the degree of AS but to the mechanical stresses placed on the vessel wall downstream of a stenotic lesion.
