Staying in the country for your J1 visa means that it might take longer to receive. My legal department recommends that applicants return to their home country.

you will need to download and fill out form I-539 from www.uscis.gov website, and enclose all supporting documents requested with it. Do read the instructions. It will have the address to mail it to. You will need to apply at least 3-4 months in advance.

Yeah, It takes more than 3 months. Check timetable at www.USCIS.gov
