MATCH COMMUNICATIONS: What can I say to programs? What's the meaning of the PD words? http://www.nrmp.org/res_match/about_res/ensuring....) Applicants and program directors may express a high degree of interest in each other and try to influence decisions in their favor, but must not make statements implying a commitment. Although the Match Participation Agreement does not prohibit either an applicant or program director from volunteering how one plans to rank the other, it is a violation to request such information. Program directors and applicants frequently engage in the practice of sending letters following the applicant's interview with the program. Those letters often contain statements that can be misinterpreted by either party. Match participants must understand that such letters are not binding and have no standing when final rank order lists are submitted.

WHAT PROGRAMS SHOULD I INCLUDE IN MY ROL? Applicants are advised to rank all of the programs deemed acceptable, i.e., programs where they would be happy to undertake residency training. Conversely, if an applicant finds certain programs unacceptable and is not interested in accepting offers from those programs, the program(s) should not be included on the applicant's rank order list.

HOW SHOULD I RANK MY PROGRAMS? see bold DOES IT DECREASE MY CHANCES TO RANK WITH A PROGRAM TO HAVE IT RANKED LOW IN MY ROL? ABSOLUTELY NO (see underlined italic) Applicants should rank programs in actual order of preference. Their choices should not be influenced by speculation about whether a program will rank them high, low, or not at all. The position of a program on an applicant's rank order list will not affect that applicant's position on the program's rank order list, and therefore will not affect the program's preference for matching with that applicant as compared with any other applicants to the program. During the matching process, an applicant is placed in his/her most preferred program that ranks the applicant and does not fill all its positions with more preferred applicants. Therefore, rank number one should be the applicant's most preferred choice.
