I haven't done UW yet. I have a question from persons who have done one on steps, like khorshid, Nima and dragonflye: I am going to register for step 1, I have a question about filling the application forms, my question is about clerkship part, do I need to fill the form with the both or only I should write about my clerkship?

salam be hamegi, I am new to thread and need some advice. I am currently a PhD student at U of Toronto. Have an MSc from U of Toronto in human genetics. I am considering to take a 1 yr leave of absence from graduate school to write USMLE exams. and apply for 2009 match for pathology. For me it is pathology or nothing. I have a couple of publications from my MSc. What are my chances? Do you think it is likely to get a pathology position? or is it better to finish my PhD before match (which obviously takes 4-5 more years). Thank you guys for your thoughts

To Ehsan, Welcome! Pathology is competitive, but it is doable. You need very good score >95, good connections or very good LoRs. Paper in patho will help. Good luck, Amirhossein

Shohreh, I see you are talking about passing socre for usmle, you have to ace the exam, don't forget it. 45% means a score around 85.

Hello to everybody there I passed my step 1 and 2 with 92 and 96 and took step 2CS also. I wanna apply for 2008 match, but my problem is I don't know how to approach for an observership or externship? I'm interested in psychiatry. Thanks in advance,

Congrates, Nadia, good for you with your descent socres. Wish you the best. Psychiatry is my favorite also, but I am far more behind you, haven't done any of steps. I wish you a very good position in Psych, and I am sure that with these decsent scores you'll get it.

ever heard of mass application?! Email as many people as you can, usually people write +150 Emails from AMA list ..don't worry if it's the right person, they will redirect you to the person in charge.write a tempting CV and mention all your pros(which I'm sure you have many).and also try to call them in person too.if you're residing in US go to the hospitals near you.why would they not want you?? I'm sure you can get one... ps should there be any strings just pull as hard as possible!!

what ever book you use in my oppinion is enough for the step one , specialy kaplan notes is good , you have to add the online sites as university of utah link for the slides there are exelent explanations along with pictures , I think KAplan was enough , but I studied tones of aditional sources , and I scored very high in path, but again I think Kaplan with a good grasp is enough.do not forget no body has the time to study A-Z of medicine from every books.Goljan highyields and his audio help alot also. Good luck

It's true hedieh. I got 59% in UW and got 96/238 for step 2 CK. But I studied for three months more after having done with UW. So it really differs, if till the last day someone does UW and go for the exam, then 59% is not enough for getting more than 90 in real exam and score gonna be around 85. For scoring more than 90 one needs to get around 65% at least in UW. This is my idea. hope it helps.

For people who are applying this year, Just as a reminder: if you are applying for prelim and cat in internal medicine, send them two different PS, one for prelim IM and one for Cat. Don't apply for prelim and cat in a same program. If you know somebody in a program, call them and let them know that you are applying to their program.
