nima is right.
if you have time, do "Medical Microbiology made ridiculously simple".(if you are intrested i think i have the PDF version, i can send it to you).
it is a great book , but not enough. you need to complement it with Kaplan.

and yes micro was never easy. we just have to deal with it...
the key ? repeat, repeat, repeat!

main point to focus for each organism :
1- properties ( gram +/-, aerob/anaerob, etc.)
2- diseases they cause
3- lab diagnosis
4- therapy

that is it! don`t kill with unnecessary details.
after you are done with all the organisms, there is this chapter in kaplan called "Comparative micro" . it is excellent. it puts everything that you may confuse together. it is just the final touch.

and by the way here is the order of importance:

Bacteria=virus>protozoa=fungi>worms

if you study this good, it helps your score ALOT. i had many many Micro questions, which where very straight and not that hard.

Good luck!

hi
do you have any idea about anatomy?i heard that it has the lowest qs in the exam.is that right?if it is so ,how do i have to deal whit it?what chapter is better to read from it?do i have to read all the materials?or i can skip some of them?please...i don't have enough time and now after microbiology i am so confused(gij o vij and ghati pati).....

Shohreh,

Sorry about my sarcasm, but with this attitude you are not ganna get a good score, I mean more than 90. They test your general knowledge of medicie not a particular subject and I think your background is not that much strong, so please postpone your exam. Recently, they changed the type of questions and you will find harder and more lenghty questions. One of my friend took the step 1 one month ago and despite of studying for one year and doing all Kaplan Q bank, got 88. So, be careful.

well i understand how overwhelming this exam can be. it IS a lot of different subjects and if you put them together YOU WILL BE SCARED!

just take a moment, and think about this: the way to do this is "ONE STEP AT A TIME"!!!

if you are studying Micro and at the same time thinking about Anatomy, the only result will be more stress, less productivity!!

this pattern of thinking happens to everyone. but the key to overcome this problem is to FOCUS ON THIS ONE SUBJECT you are involved with right now. when it is done, move on to the next. ONE STEP AT A TIME!

first make a general plan, and estimate nearly how long you need for each subject. and when you are done with the big plan, FOCUS on the one subject you are stuying right now and forget about the others!!

amir is right, if you think you need more time. take it later if possible. but please please don`t mix things!
now is the time for micro, forget anatomy. you will deal with it later.

and about the importance of anatomy. i don`t know! it is very individual, some people got more questions of anatomy some less. the point is that anatomy is not a difficult subject anyway. and you will regret to miss such easy questions on the exam. the Kaplan may look thick but doesn`t take along time to go over it.
but again my suggestion is to give priorety to the following :

Neuro>Gross>Embryo>Histo

and finally take it easy. and pray to God for some peace of mind (Aramesh). take a deep breath and start attacking the subjects one by one. and you will make it. always keep a positive view smiling face

Good luck!

hi
i started to read embrylogy from kaplan lecture notes but it is very short (15 pages).what do you suggest?
i receaved a cd from ecfmg that has some qs ,are they similar to the real exam?if it is yes what do you think :is it better to do it after i finished all the books?
and what about phamacology?it is not so hard but i don,t have any idea about its qs..

  #33

in my opinion, embryo in Kaplan is more than enough. but focus more on the "systemic embryo" e.g. heart, GI, lung, etc. which are at the begining of each chapter.

USMLE CD has i think around 150 sample questions which are old and mostly easy. so the exam will not be like that. this CD is mainly good for you to get familiar with the program on the real exam.

the best questions as i have said before, are Kaplans. try to focus on them.

same for pharm. you want to see how pharm questions look like? do the Qbook, pharm section.

BRS for Path and Physio are the best, but try to have the last edition, esp for patho, too many new staff about proto-oncogenes and genetics.

Hello everybody,
I am happy to find this friendly group who are trying to share and help each other for their goals.

I have been a few years away from the clinical field, doing PhD in Genetics, but now I want to come back to clinic.

As a grandpa, graduated in 1996 Tehran university!!, I have started with Kaplan notes and have the Goljan & FA in the schedule.

I would be very happy to have your advices on any special study methods and the real chance for an old graduate like me.

I would like to follow Internal Medicine & Oncology, so not dreaming of Radiology, Orthopedics, ...

Good luck and God bless you all.
