Hi, I am medical student from Mexico, and I am currently planning my studying schedule for step 2. When you guys write in your messages that you studied for 4 or even 7 months for the steps, was this FULL TIME? Every med student in Mexico has to do a mandatory one year social service (community clinics) after med school in order to get your degree. I was thinking of studying for step 2 during this year, probably studying for about 4 hours per day for about 4 months... is this reasonable? Would you recomend me to take another year off after this social service to study full time? May be take the kaplan live courses? What do you think about taking step 2 befor step 1? Thank you for your help!!

I think you can do it if you dedicate, no need to study more than four hours a day when you are fresh from college. Hit the books hard, do a lot of questions. I think USMLE 1 first is better. Good luck.

If possible, give the test after a vacation period, so you can dedicate a few more hours a day during the last weeks before the test, to memorize the high yield subjects. Short term memory helps a lot.

hi rodmty, I'm from latin america too and I had to do that year after graduation too... I tried to study for step 1 during that year but to me it was a waste of time, cause I couldnt dedicate enough time since I did it in one of the most demanding hospitals at my country and I had to do shifts... but for step 2 is different, since its more clinical and we are more fresh with that knowledge. If I were you, I would hold on the social service year until I prepare my step 1 (I did it backwards) and then after that start studying for step 2 while doing it. Right now I'm preparing step 2 ck and working part time from 8am-1pm and I think is doable in ~5 months, plan to take it in may (and step 2 cs in march). Wish you luck!!!

I am a foreight student studying for Step 2 ck actually . I am from Haiti and I studied medicine in Tampico Tamaulipas ( Mexico ) and I too had to do social service . I took advantage of this year and studied 8 hours a day and took Step 1 just after finishing this year and I did pass . You can do it too my friend , juts don ' t waste your time doing PAPERWORKS . This is is a total waste of time if you wanna go for the BOARDS . Focus on Step 1 first as most of the material from Step 1 will come again in Step 2 . Good Luck !
