Hey guys, just found this site! Taking step in 3 weeks. I haven't left the house in a LONG time. Here's my deal! I've been through FA like 12/13 times over the past year.It weighs about 10 pounds from all of my annotations and highlighting. Ive been through all the Kaplan books 4-5 times each. I attended the Kaplan retreat, got drunk with some of the professors and hung out with Goljian. Ive been through Goljian notes, 4-5 times annotated with his live lecture that I was at plus listened to his Audio maybe 4-5 times each per chapter! I also had him autograph my notes. Ive been studying almost a year now. My Q bank for some reason wont get into the 80s and I've been through that thing like 2 or 3 times. Basically, I know my $hit. But why can't I break 80 in Qbank? All I want is above a 220 but my goal for studying for USMLE was to aim for that 99 so I have some good leeway. Is my Qbank telling me that I'm doing something wrong? Am I going to be ok? Thanks for listening!!! PS - I really dont want to take the NBME. But I enjoy reading the posted questions because I'm getting them all right

Thanks for the reply.. I feel if I take the NBME and do well I will have false security. If I do poorly then I will have major stress... But after seriously contemplating it Im going to take it 2 weeks before my exam. If I do poorly I will just try really hard to get the score up within that two week period

sounds like you have prepared so well if you are actually goin for a 99 then i really thing NMBE is a must....cause not breakin 80's in qbank after all that review and with the repetition then not takin a very accurate gauge of your progress could hurt you. only cause if you take nmbe and do well then you know you are ready and CAN get that 99....but oyu still have to review. if you take it and get in the 80's then you know you can push for 2 weeks and go over what is weak and still get that 99. i'm only sayin it cause with all the time and money and effort you obviously put in, i think you will be disappointed if you didnt do this last things to get that 99

lilly, Thank you for the response. I have decided to take an NBME exam to see gauge how I'm doing. Also, Ive now broken 86 on the Q bank. Another thing is that I've looked at all the stats of high scorers on USMLE and hardly any of them ended with scores in the high 80s or 90s on the Q bank!

The reason why high scorers have only 80's, (mine is 84 in Kaplan QBank) is because they do it only once. Why? Because when I started doing it twice, I get scores like 98 and 100 so proves repeating it does not indicate your actual real knowledge and capability in exam. If it does, I should've gotten 99/unknown score(give highest score ever known) rather than the 99/256 I actually got. I actually tested this not in Step 1 but in Step 2 CK UW QBank. Averaged 77% but when I started taking it a second time (6 blocks purely as a test), I got 2 98% and 4 100%. Got only 99/258 and not 99/unknown score in Step 2. So be careful with correlation. You might get surprised.

I thought same what askdoc says, it is much easier to score higher after going trough same thing 2-3 times. It is the false evaluation of your real knowledge, rather try a different source of MCQs, where you can really test yourself.

askdoc, I agree. At the last minute I broke down and took an NBME. My score is right at the border of where I want to be. Therefore, after careful consideration, I have pushed my test back a month. I think in a month i can go over exactly what Im getting wrong.. it's usually the same thing, over and over and over. The reason I get things wrong is because I never learned it properly in school. The things I do well are the things I nailed in school. i also think your a genius, Those study tips and your evaluation of how people study was an eye opener for me. Janaki, Our school gives us all the Kaplan books. I started by doing the videos and watching the books. Then I enrolled in Kaplan, and they go over all the books AND add their own notes to it! Since then ive been reading them and rereading them. My big problem really is my speed of recall. I understand a concept but then when a question is presented it takes me over a minute to think about the process and come up with an answer. I need to speed things up!
