a 5 y.o girl is brought to pediatrician - mom noticed a single soft nontender mass underneath her daughter tongue. The physician reassures her that it is a common congenital ectopic anomaly that does not affect the function of the mass or the hormone it secretes.
Hypersecretion of this hormone can cause wich of the following conditions?
a. amenorrhea
b.constipation
c.hyperlipidemia

and if you have any idea why correct answer is correct

a. is only the choice (d was cold intolerance) but why?

your right, I must of subconciously been brainwashed by New and lost, I knew it caused hypothyroisim, thats the only explanation I have about the dumb reasoning.

lol subconcious brainwashing...

I did a question like thing a long time ago, it had something to do with a ligual thyroid. What does the answer say?

  #9

answer:
hypersecretion of thyroxine (T4) from the ectopic gland can result in menstrual abnormalities, including amenorrhea and oligomenorrhea.

  #10

Nice, really doesnt tell us shit, this web site say that lingual thyrois often secret less and the lead to hypothyroism. http://www.turk-jem.dergisi.org/text.php3?id=513

thats true Hypothyroidism does cause Amenorrhea Classical. But in case of Hyperthyroidism there r menstrual irregularities thats y i have stated earlier that will she have Classical Amenorrhea i dont think so so i was doubtful
So here wht i have learnt Hypothyroidism will definitely cause Classical Amenorrhea whereas in Hyperthyroidism u will have either very scanty menstrual flow or oligomenorrhea.
That said all the symptoms that r given in the choices of ur question including " D Cold Intolerance r the most classical signs of HYPOTHYROIDISM.

Amost every reference of Hyperthyroidism will tell u Menstrual irregularities n nothing else. And Ancylostoma is right that the Lingual Thyroid doesnt secrete enuf hormones to maintain body function if the actual Thyroid gland is removed

if it would be a q about amenorrhea due to some abnormalities in thyroid secretion - which one would you pick
a. hypothyroidism
b. hyperthyroidis
i know how to explain amenorrhea in hypothyr but not in hyperthyroidism

  #14

Amenorrhea = Hypothyroidism (Period)
U cant explain Amenorrhea in Hyperthyroidism untill n unless they say that the pt is having oligomenorrhea n rest of the picture evolves or looks like Hyperthyroidism

well whatever, I will take scanty menstruation and oligomenorhea. Lets not menstruate over this. On a good note, I got a really hard workout in and cant move my back...Goodnight

I think question asks specifically hypersecretion of this hormone...so basically hypethyroidism.....it produceses oligo to amenorrhea....while hypo produces menorrhagia....i dont think there is any confusion...so answer is aaaaaaaa

I guess darkhorse is right, I udn`t have intruded, but I think we should depend more on texts for references ...

I wish I could attach the url to the accessmedicine/MDconsult e-texts, but couldn`t do it in past, so I compiled the effect of hypo/hyper thyroidism from Williams textbook of endocrinology and Harrison`s where they clearly say .....

Hypothyroidism, when mild can cause MENORRHAGIA and when severe and in late stages can cause oligomenorrhea and finally amenorrhea; and oligo/amenorrhea is rare in case of primary hypoTH.

On the other hand ..in HyperTH there is oligomenorrhoea and finally cessation of menstrual cycle.

I also checked Ganong and Current OBGYN but there was nothin in particular.

Attached find the compiled stuff for quick review.

GL everyone
