I have an 80yr male with cirrhosis showing on his last CAT scan and edema & ascites showing. He has no history of alcohol consumption. All test come back within normal ranges.

His current meds are Metoclopramide, Prevacid, Lipitor, Ramipril, Proscar & Asprin 81mg..

As of now the cause of the cirrhosis is a mystery. Any suggestions as to an avenue to explore or other possible cause for the edema & ascites?

Well, I would test for HVC, HBV and screen for hematocromatosis and then test for autoantibody for immunologic causes.
After that biopsy.
By the way could you tell me what drug are Prevacid and Proscar?

Well, for hemochromatosis, the patients usually are younger than this patient and may have arthralgia only without diabetes and tanning skin.

Would it help to do a paracentesis of the ascite to eliminate a right heart failure, infections, malignancies and a liver biopsy if no contraindication :?:

Of course, it would be helpful. Acording to the albumin gradient (serum albumin- ascitis albumin), it would give some guide about the cause. It also can be done cytologic exam, in order to looking for atypic cells.
