Hello bbb I accepted a prematch offer 2 weeks ago and the prog sent me an original copy of the contract that I have to sign and send back to them. When I asked if there was another original copy for my records, the PC (a very sweet lady) told me that I had to do a photocopy of this contract after I sign it. My question: Is it normal in the US to have a photocopy of a contract and not an original signed copy? I mean here in Europe, everyone has an original copy of his contract (appartment contract, work, etc.). Should ask for it? Tx

i think one of my friends was in same situation. Another person had 3 copies and she had to send back 2 of them and retain one.

Every program is going to have different requirements. I can't answer for all. If you need (or want an original), tell them that you need one for a visa, etc.

Wamba I know people (IMGs) who worked here in the USA at big academic institution (on the research side though) who NEVER had a contract... But they got faculty appointments, visa, salary, health insurance, the whole nine yard but without any offical contract. It is very differerent from the European system, but it works... don't worry.

WOW! But I think I'll still ask a copy for my records, in a gentle, friendly and diplomatic way. We'll see. Thanks for your replies.

wamba, I understand your concern. I've been working for a few years now for the hospital that gave you the pre-match and I never signed a contract; yet, I have all the benefits and the whole megillah (i.e., the whole nine yards). The way you prove that you're their employee to whoever wants to know that is by showing them your badge and/or the paystub.

Wamba as you know and some of the rest, I signed a prematch and YES they sent me an original with all the signatures (mine and four more) but I was very pushy about it following up every week, as soon as I got the contract (signed by them) I dropped the match not a minute later not a minute before.

i think take the prematch if its your top 3. and if you have less than 10 iv's. i think you should ask for original contract for your file. congrtas faa but cool down and enjoy your success. regarding selling short, i beleive bbb is absolutely right. best of luck to you all for the match may we get our top choice. om shanti (let peace prevail) satyamev jayte (let truth prevail)

Calm down... The same happened to me. I withdrew from the match and only got a draft of the contract. The real one will come when the match is over, the department has all the names, etc... then they'll deal with everyone at the same time.... It is not a big deal. You have an email or something welcoming in that program, right? That should be enough for now. Trust your future employer/boss... at least for now...

In my case, I had initially signed the Offer Letter(early dec ) and sent back the original and kept a copy for myself. No one ever mentioned anything about withdrawing from the Match/NRMP. I just went ahead and did that myself. They said they would conduct a routine background check on me and then send the contract itself. Last week, I received the contract. There are 2 originals, both signed by the dean as well as the PD. I have to sign and keep one copy for myself. So, every program has its own way of dealing with this issue. Just have faith and clarify your queries with the PC . Good Luck.

I did and she was very understanding, she called the GME office, and said that they will send me an official letter with the offer and promising a contract in early April. I scanned and emailed a copy of my papers and will withdraw as soon as I get that letter in couple of days or so. I wasn't comfortable because of all I've read on the forum : "do not do anything until you have the contract, signed by them, in your hands" !!! Thanks guys for your help:-) Good Luck to all of the rest.. It's been a long trip, eh?
