do u think it's wise to rank a few fm programs over some im programs. i felt very good at 2 fm programs with excellent work atmosphere and had good interviews too. will u rank these above im programs where there r no computerised orders , in bad areas . i think that if u have no chance of fellowship after im then better do fm. just need to c what other people think. good luck

let me tell y'all my story...having not gone to school here, it was so hard to pick a specialty and stick with it...so my two bosses, one a med-ped and the other a fm told me to list my top five choices and apply to all of them...at first i thought they were a little crazy, but they explained to me that this match process was like a filter system...only "your people will take you" they said...you have to understand these two are more than bosses to me, they are mentors and friends...so i threw caution to the wind and applied to five specialties...guess what? all invitations were from fm at really good universities...none of the other specialties even wanted to talk to me...not even the community programs that are not very popular...so i guess what i am trying to say is that go where you will be comfortable...that my friends is paramount!!!

Hello, I have the same the same opinion . There are some programs where you have "almost" everything : research , reputation , good learning , BUT you do not feel comfortable . You have to go to a place where you will spend at least 80 hours a week ,you have to feel the environment is at least friendly. You will have your good and your bad days , but chose a place where you have pleasure to wake up 5 am and go to work. I went for a second look in a Program that I thought it was my first choice , but thanks God i went for a second look -the residents did not look to each other , are sarcastic , laugh at each other's mistake , and the attendings think they have the king in their bellies. It can a be a tremendous program , but I have been trough this in my home country and no more for me.

right friends. i keep the work hrs and bad area at last of my choices. i think the attitude of faculty and fellow residents is very imp too. i have in fact kept a so called bad med program high just becuz my friend is there and i have seen the relationship between residents and faculty is grt.anyway i pray that i match at any place. good luck to all.

I think it just depends on ur interest. i would choose IM over FM anyday. Cause my sole interest is IM.

It depends on your interest first of all. then depends on the hospital environment, city, and further career opportunities. I would go for IM. 3 years of working with bad guys is better than ending up in one speciality that hurts you for a lifetime. Bythe way, how are you sure those FMs are better than the IMs?
