observerships can be done under private practioners. 1. Its better than having nothing in hand 2. I helps in giving an explanation for the clinical gaps in resume 3. MAy give you a US LOR(which is better than an IMG LOR) But Anyday A University Residency program, is a better place to do observership/externship. But you can do it if you have nothing, meanwhile carry on the search for better university places/community hospitals. If you are doing any observership under a doc who's from a different specialty & he's in private practice I dont think thats a good idea. It shud be ur last option, if u get nothing!!

I DONT UNDERSATND WHAT YOU MEAN BY "doing sth" AS FAR AS I KNOW EXTERNSHIP MEANS HAVING A HANDS ON EXPERIENCE well it depends on the private practioner. WOULD A PRVT PRACTIONER LET YOU DO HANDS ON PRACTICE IN A PRIVATE SETTING, THERE ARE MILLIONS OF ISSUES FIRSTLY, HIS REPUTATION, PRIVATE PRACTICE IS HIS BREAD & BUTTER, HE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR EVERY CASE. WOULD HE TAKE A RISK? HAD I BEEN HIM i WON'T HAVE! SECONDLY YOU WILL HAVE TO BUY A MALPRACTICE INSURANCE WHICH I AM SURE WILL COST U A LOT BEING AN FMG THIRDLY, AS I SAID BEFORE..... A University Residency program, is a better place to do observership/externship i HAD ASKED MY UNCLE TO LET ME OBSERVE UNDER HIM, HE IS A PRVT PRACTIONER & HE HAD JUST STARTED THEN, HE REFUSED STAT DUE TO ABOVE MENTIONED REASONS. BUT IF YOUR UNCLE/AUNTY WHOEVER IS THE PERSON LETTING YOU DO IT, THEN ITS HIS LUCK!
