I thought that we should all know this, if some dont already.

A 23 yr old eats a healthy dinner. The answer choices indicate the rate of acid secretion before and various times in a meal. At which time is the ph of the stomach contents the lowest?

Time Rate of secretion

A before the meal 2 mEq H+/hr

b 30 mins after 35 mEq H+/hr

C 60 mins after 29 mEq H+/hr

D 90 mins after 20 mEq H+/hr

E 120 mins after 10 mEq H+/hr

As always I require explanations for your answers. You must think even if you guess.

Come on people!!!

  #3

it might be mEq H+?
or K+?
lowest should be A - before meal, lowest acid secretion.

Sorry about that, I just typed it quicky and copy and pasted. Maybe thats why noone answered?

B . Highest acid sectretion , lowest PH.

i think its B...it shopuld be after a meal...and secretion starts when food is in the mouth and gets bigger as it reaches stomach....(im not sure if thois is the right answer,,..but this is my 0.02$ opinion)

they give rate of secretion and ask about lowest ph.
After meal ingested H+ secretion is stimulated rate of secretion is high. (B)
low ph in stomach by negative feedback inhibits gastrin secretion --> inhibit H+secretion
H+ secretion rate is lowest (inhibited) - in A --> low ph supposedly.
must be trick somewere sad

I guess its B......since it sez...'CONTENTS'...ie: acid+ food -combined pH wud be lower than the secreted HCl...sticking out tongue
H+ conc.of secrection is a diff. entity from pH of contents.grin
later even dilute HCl wud raise the pH which is stabilised by initial mixing...Ans plz.wink

me 007, you nailed it, between meals the ph is the lowerst which prevents gastrin release and thus acid secretion. When food enters the stomach, it makes the environment more alkaline and thus causes decrease inhibition of gastrin. Gastrin levels rise and so does acid secretion. Only when the ph becomes low do we see the secretion drop.!!!
