Hi,

well, this is my first time here...i guess i should begin with why i'm posting this. I took step 1 having studied for it for around 5months and i failed getting in the mid-50s (dont remember the exact, kinda erased that from my memory sticking out tongue) and being disappointed with that i continued with school and then took 1yr to study for it again....i just recently got my score and i failed AGAIN!!! missing a passing score by 3points...I am so so so frustrated, depressed and well de-motivated.

I don't know what i should do now? like what new technique to do/how should my studying methods be now?

Please i need words of advice.

Dear Friend, DONT be dissappointed. You are still in med school and have plenty of time to cover up. You have not mentioned about study material but, your duartion says that you have not prepared well for the test. As, 1 year after 1st time is a good amount of time to prepare and learn from the mistakes. So, forget about the tragedy and start preparing with new hope as, there are plenty of IMGs(including me) have not cleared Step 1 ,first time. So, give up all the sorrows and take a new initiative to start a new era...And about preparing ,go through one of the 99'ers experience or just do Kaplan(notes and Q bank) and Goljan patholgy. Always, keep in mind that if anyone can get 99,than you can also -just you have to prepare yourself appropriately....

I failed thrice and last time was 10 years ago. But the key is never give up. US is the best place for IMGs in the world this I learnt from my experience. Get up and move it....pal

Being my first time on this forum, i realized (as from your responses) that i didnt completely give info on my studying. The first time i took the step 1 (that was while i was in 4th yr med school) ,having studied for 5 months and got in the mid-50s, i had taken Kaplan (watching videos including Kaplan Qbank) That was mostly my study method for the first time.

I decided to graduate already and then study for step 1 again. That was when i took the full 1yr to study...i listened to goljan, did Kaplan Qbank Qs, USMLE World Qs, NMS Qs and First Aid not to mention High Yield books in most subjects. I thought i was pretty prepared for this exam. My brother who has just started his residency even helped and "pimped" me on stuff. I know I'm not a good test taker when it comes to standardized tests (I tend to get very nervous and get easily frustrated and panic when i face a Q i am unsure of which really is my downfall) but i honestly thought i was well prepared. I knew my stuff.....

So that's what i had done to prepare for step 1 both times. If someone can kindly give me advice as to what else i can do...i know i must be doing something wrong. Maybe you have some good tips that would be helpful for me. Anything would really be appreciative

Thanks KOBITA...

i am beyond the disappointed stage now...after just receivng my scores, i was in the "sulking mood" stage which i know is just natural...

You are absolutely right though, if others can get a 99 then i can too...but what is the 99er's experience?

Go through this website you will find people who got 99 at Step 1,whom are 99ers. But, I think you dont need to do that as your perp material says that you are well equipped with your materials. If you had read those well than I dont know what is your problem??? I read only Kaplan notes, q book, Q bank, Goljan pathology, First Aid and scored mid 80's.So, I think you have something call exam phobia which screws your exam. But, you have to keep in mind that there are some test Q's which you dont need to answer right as well as you dont need to get every Q's right.Just set your mind that I dont need to answer all Q's correct and go thorugh your study material again & again.Sorry for the line=> (you have not prepared well for the test).

you only missed 3 points? They just recently raised it from 182, to 185, if I remembered correctly. Only if you took it last year, you could have passed.

Looking at the reminder thunder gave u u sud be glad u didn't pass with that 75..what wud u have done with it. U know what ur problem wud have been besides the fact that u have testophobia like most of us...which now i'm thinking probably just comes from being unprepared like that 50% here and 50% there thing....Ok even though like u say ur brothe "pimped" u up, weird choice of wordgrin, don't let him see this!......what happens is that we really fail to understand what they are trying to say....u are already at 75 now....get going from there...if u wait u will lose this too and start at 20%.. read this post and read it well...change ur strategies and DO not pay too much attention to negativism coming from u or anywhere else. U are OK, it was afterall just a test..and being a medstudent and taking these cudn't have been easy. No wu need to start with QS qSand qs.
