Hi there

okay i am a third year medical student. i plan on taking my step 1 in june. i have been using the regular first aid, kaplan, goljan, guyton and qbank to pass n pass well.

before anyone takes the description literally. i am very smart, well my marks show. i did very well in my classes, i just want someone to recommend me honestly, what are the best books to teach the subjects almost from scratch but prep you for step 1 also.

whenever i asked someone what to use to study, they always just said, "first aid, kaplan, goljan n qbank" and i will do well.. this makes sense but it also worries me, because imagine they studied tremendously during their classes and courses and maybe these resources have minimal in them- just to review lightly. maybe all that htey already learnt, is not really in these recommended books.

or what if they barely ever paid attention in a class, and these recommended books, explain everything perfectly... so even a dunce can pass!

my question is.. how much did u know naturally before picking up these? by these i mean "first aid+kaplan+qbank"

what would ur advice be to someone who,, is new to all this, never listened in calss, barely passed... what material would you recommend?!

i am not saying im stupid, never paid attention, i got fairly high marks. i just want to know.. are these materials so good, that they can make anyone understand almost everything that was taught in the past few years at schoool; or sum up the basics?

if say,, one abso0lutely scked in a subject at school; is a book like kaplan n first aid sufficient to pass? or should they read the actual entire textbook for that subject.

ahh am i making sense?

i just want to make sure when ppl say read these following, they really mean, just read those. its not like a hidden common sense, to also reaed the heavy textbooks for all the classes as well .

u can just post waht u used, and how well you studied in classes to begin with..

like did you know most subjects pretty well, and these materials just helped u kno the most important things.

or were u, or do u kno of any students who barely studied... and what did they use to pass

Everything you said was fine, kaplan- best in the business w lectures especially if you have trouble understanding somethings. , Golajn + kaplan for path, First iaid for mnemonics and added facts, sometmes I used Kaplans med essentials which fills in wholes in the lecture notes and is Arranged in systems so you can do it quickly after finshing a body system as a short review with some new material. Do the hy books for embryo and anatamy, histo too if you have time. Then kaplan q bank, usmle worl q bank (after). Do Some as many questions as many times as you can. If you have time throw in IV q bank. I cannot stress the importance of questions enough. After doing all this pray that your actually smart and it wasnt a coverup and take the test. Maybe NBME for evaluation.

So you think it is best to do kaplan q bank then do USMLEworld? Please let me know because I have 87% of usmleworld to finish. I am using kaplan qbook per subject and usmleworld for random questions.

I'm doing the same thing, Usmle world was a little tougher then kaplan, I started usmle world before I did the path questions in kaplan and thus my score is probably not as high as it should be . Cumulative 74 % now . Everyone was talking about USMLE world and I had to take a look. Now I still have to do kaplan path and realised that some of it may have helped get a better score.Kaplan q bank for me is 10-15% higher. Kaplan is your bread and butter, learn most of you stuff from kaplan and then use usmle world to back up what you know and teach you some of the hard q that come in the exam. USMLE world is cheap and if you have kaplan q bank, I would do both as much as possible. I dont think it matters really if you are begiinning your questions. Its just that Usmle world is teaches you the finer points and unusuals, you should alread now something before touching it. If you do both twice by june, you will chew up and regurgitate a 99.

Thank you so much or answering my question, Ancyclostoma. I hope you get a 99 on your exam. I would like to take the exam in March, and I am doing my second second reading (finished bioch, and neuro). I feel like it's more of a review for me with the second reading. My plan is to go over everything three times and do both USMlewold twice and kaplan qbank twice with explanations. I hope that will help me to ace this exam..
