Arachnoiditis, U must hav had better options than JCMC.
Lillyny, U r right but hands-on experience depends on the personal effort of the intern/resident as well. It looked to me a balanced program with good atmosphere, all faculty easily approachable, good residents, nice PD....but no fellowships
It seems a good program, perticularly for those not having scores in high 90's.

What do you mean by "not too much hands on experience"?

SilencedMD, did u hav ur interview there? or got prematch?

oh i meant that according to the residents there you normal carry around 4-5 pts a day. other places i have visited and talked to residents was around 9-12 pts. the morning is dedicated to lecture....and is "protected time"....meaning that you can not be paged out of it.

the admit cap is 5 but all the residents i meet said that you dont come anywhere near admittin that many. basically...they got great pathology there they say but not that many pts per resident...so it is "limited hands on due to number of pts" that is a actual quote from a pgy-1

shamail is right though.....it is person dependent. like any program if you get what you put in.

I dont have high 90's nor better offers....it was too early in the season I wanted to visit other places and then make an informed decision.....I might regret my decision though....I think the program as nice but the drawback was fellowship placement following residency and the cost of living....

  #10

buddy i liked the program too becuz everything was new. but now i think that is an average community hospital with nothing exceptional except the protected teaching time. i will definately rank it but iu have heard that they generally give prematch for h1 and take green cards in match so i don't have any high hopes for that.

  #11

arachnoiditis, did u get prematch from any other place then?
yes, they just giv 4 or maximum 5 prematches, rest go with match.
Aajkal, I am not sure whether they take all green cards for match, but its true that many residents there are on GC.
The only drawback looks to b the matter of fellowships.
Chief resident said that 50 percent residents succeed in getting fellowships somewhere, but thats the percentage for any community hospital.

You can always look for fellowship, somewhere else after you finish residency.

nop going to the Match....ya I agree that we can look for felowship following residency but its always tough to get into competitive fellowship right out of residency if the program either does not have fellowships or is not a well known program.....at JCMC non of the residents in the last 5 years was able to secure a fellowship in Nephrology, GI, Cardiology.....Rheumatology is hot there as the chairman is world famous Rhematologist......the Chief is going to Nephro at Emroy but he did his residency at NYU.....I understand the pros and cons of prematch but at times its worth taking a chance as its a life time decision....

arachnoiditis x2. Respect for your courage. 5 pt per residents might sound few but if you are allowed to make decisions, work close to attendings, perform invasive maneuvers and if the population is varied, you could have a better training than a program with 12 pt per residents. When the training is too busy, you don't have time to learn from what you see everyday. Its like taking a train which goes 500km/h over another one 100km/h. You don't have time to appreciate the beauty of the outside.

Match is a gamble either you win big or lose big....Wamba I am not courageous, I am scared of the Match but then they say" Not taking a risk is another risk".....if I am given the same prematch now I will take it but opportunities come and they go away and we have to keep moving... as Robert Frost said" In three words I can sum up everything I've learned about life: it goes on." So I have to move own and look forward to the Match.....

  #16

sorry it was move on...grin

  #17

Wamba and Arachnoidits I fully agree with U. U r right.....its better to work in a place with few patients in ur hands and paying thorough concentration on them instead of having lots of patients and not being able to offer the same. I have experienced that having patients beyond a certain no. decreases the learning benefit. Diversity of pathology is very essential and I think JCMC does have that. Invasive procedures depend on personal interest. wamba did u get prematch? Arachnoidits, good luck in match. Hope U will find a better opportunity in match!

  #18

I did prematch. I'm done with all this stress.smiling face

  #19

Congrants. Did U prematch at JCMC or at some other place?

  #20

Maimonides NY

  #21

wamba, thats great.

  #22

Good Luck to everybody who Prematched.....lets see what the Match has in store for rest of us...grin

  #23

Arachnoiditis and all others entring in match, best of luck!
