This may be a UW question but not sure... got it from someone else... Answer? Whats the rule for pregnancy? tell parent or not? What if the underage patient asks for a pregnancy test? From whom do you need permission? Patient, parent, what about sibling who is of age? A 16 YR OLD F IS BROUGHT IN BY HER MOTHER FOR COMPLAINTS OF NAUSEA AND VOMITING. THE PT DOES NOT SHOW ANY OVER SIGN OF DISTREE BUT REMAIN QUITE WITH DOWNCAST EYES, WHILE HER MOTHER TALKS TO THE DOC. SHE DENIES ANY OTHER SYMPTOMS. THE PHYSICIAN TELLS THE MOTHER THAT HE WOULD LIKE TO INTERVIEW THE PT ALONE. AFTER HER MOTHER LEAVES THE GIRL STARTS SOBBING AND INFORMS THE DOC THAT A HOME PREGNANCT TEST SHE DID YESTERDAY TURNED OUT POSITIVE. SHE PLEADS HIM NOT TO TELL HER MOTHER. WHAT SHOULD BE THE MOST APPROPRAITE RESPONSE OFTHE DOC? 1. ASK HER TO INFORM THE MOTHER. 2. DO NOT INFORM THE MOTHER. 3. INFORM THE MOTHER B/C SHE BROUGHT IN HER DAUGHTER TO THE OFFICE. 4.ENCOURAGE HER TO INFORM HER MOTHER IN HIS PRESENCE. 5. REMIND HER THAT IT IS HIS DUTY TO INFORM HER GUARDIAN(HER PARENTS) SINCE SHE IS MINOR?

Pregnancy or having children doesn't make one emancipated (see kaplan). Serving in the military, or over 13 and living alone does make one emancipated.

4 - Encourage her to inform her mother Preg does not emancipate her... but prenatal exams or STD testing doesn't have to go through her mother... the physician is under no laws to inform her mother... but she is a minor and should be encouraged to seek help from her parents
