difference is that there is nothing wrong with Fe in Thal. Decreased Hb synthesis - alfa - or beta chain of globin. All Fe studies are normal. RBC count - normal or increased. RDW - normal. Hb phoresis normal in alfa thal. Alfa and beta minor thal requre no treatment, and treatment of severe forms (severe hemolytic anemia) requre blood transfusions - danger of iron overload Both - iron def and thal are microcytic. In iron deficiency serum iron decreased, serum ferritin -(storage form of iron) - decreased, iron binding capacity - increased, saturation - decreased.
