Dear Friends;
I am a guy who want to prepare for USMLE Step I and get top score of 99!(don't we all!) but my life depends on it. First I want to ask how much time is required for a thorough prep(for a not good..not bad student)......and secondly what is the essentials of giving the exam!wink

the key to doing well on the exam is by doing few books( 1 0r max 2) and not more and solving lots of questions.Good sources i think are the kaplan qbank similar to exam (atleast when i gave the exam) kaplan qbook(easier qs),Kaplan stimulated which i feel doing it like exam and if u score say 80% then usmle score in high 90s and finally nbme exam which is online is similar to exam and it gives u acurate correlation of the score with final step1 score...Also if u have time nms is good but not neccesary...no idea how uw is for qs...i know its good for step2..i wrote this post abt exam prep so u could read it and may find somethng useful

Actually how you prepare depends on whether you are AMG or IMG, how long ago you've graduated(ie. How much time since you opened a basic science text and took exams) and whether you're a good or average student(Your med school also matters since average grads from top schools perform better than top grads from not so stellar schools, too)

I graduated 17 years ago and therefore practically have to start from scratch, esp for Step 1. Took it last April, 2006 and got 99/256. If you want to know how I prepped, read this post which I wrote to someone who asked for help in step 1.

It never cease to amaze me how many people expect to just read FA, do QBank, study for a month or so and get a 99 in Step 1. What happened to good old hard work. If Step 1 is that easy, then why is it that 34% of IMG first time takers fail the examination. Better yet how come the mean for IMG in step 1 is around 78 or thereabouts while the mean for AMG's is around 88.(You can look at the NRMP data on match candidates for 2005 and see the distribution of Step 1 scores for both AMGs and IMGs.) Medical Schools train their students to pass their countries board exams. American Medical Schools train their students to pass the USMLE, so a month or 2 is what is just needed for their students to pass or even score 99's. Unless your medical school is in business to help you pass the USMLE rather then your country's board exam, I doubt you could afford to do the same.
