Hi all... To get an idea on the right way to go about studying for this exam, I would like to kindly ask all of you what your prep material consists of. Please list as much detail as you can,as far as to what your studying material consists of. It would really be some insight to those a little lost like me. Thanks so much ! dido

the key to doing well on the exam is by doing few books( 1 0r max 2) and not more and solving lots of questions.Good sources i think are the kaplan qbank similar to exam (atleast when i gave the exam) kaplan qbook(easier qs),Kaplan stimulated which i feel doing it like exam and if u score say 80% then usmle score in high 90s and finally nbme exam which is online is similar to exam and it gives u acurate correlation of the score with final step1 score...Also if u have time nms is good but not neccesary...no idea how uw is for qs...i know its good for step2..i wrote this post abt exam prep so u could read it and may find somethng useful http://www.prep4usmle.com/forum/thread/29509

gv5..thank you for your input. I will definitely keep what you wrote in mind. But I would like to ask...Should all my material be of kaplan notes, and if yes is it essential to attend live lectures or watch their videos. I mean ..would that really help get a good score? Are Kaplan 2004 notes ok? I plan on reading Goljan patho..should I be doing more Goljan material? forgive me 4 so many questions. thx so much.

Hi, it took me over a year to prepare step 1 because I had just moved to US. During that time I read over and over my Kaplan books and a collection called Pre-test that contains 500 questions of each subject (anatomy, physiology, etc). Then I attended a live prep for 6 weeks and after that I spent 3 weeks on the q-bank (I almost did all the questions). I scored 93!

As u must have read in my exam experience i read the kaplan notes and for path read goljan...Also did goljan audio, took notes and i think it was very useful especialy the vignettes he discusses.I went for kaplan live lectures and found it useful but i heard that after that they had changed the video set and few subjects thre were different pple teaching who were not as good as what i took......As far as i remember i found biochem, immuno, anat, physio very good and patho was bad except for the slides they showed but anyways goljan audio was best for patho..... i think u shld read my experience carefully as it has all of this and it shld clear out most of ur doubts.Personally i didnt like pre test as i did few of them and qs were in no way similar to the exam...Key to success is being strong with patho, physio, behavioral.

I got 92. My way to look at it, is that the score I got will give me a better chance to get a residency and eventually pay off the debts.

gv5..good for you. I hope you get into a residency program that you're comfortable in. Hard work does pay off, that's the good part we all wait for. It makes everything worth it. May I ask where you got the kaplan lecture videos/dvds from? I want to buy them from people selling them online but there have been many that have paid for them and when receiving them , they found the dvds to be defective. So do know anywhere secure and trustworthy that I can get them from? thx.dido
