USMLE™ Test Items with Associated Media Clips
(posted September 5, 2006, updated January 10, 2007)
In December, ECFMG’s Vice President for Operations, Stephen Seeling, visited a number of medical schools in Pakistan. During these visits, students asked about the incorporation of media (audio and/or video) clips into some multiple-choice items for the computer-based components of the United States Medical Licensing Examination™ (USMLE). This announcement reviews the available information on this topic. If you plan to take USMLE Step 1, Step 2 Clinical Knowledge (CK), or Step 3, you should be familiar with the following.

As announced on the USMLE website, there are plans to incorporate multiple-choice items with associated audio and/or video content into the Step 1, Step 2 CK, and Step 3 exams. These items will be introduced no earlier than Summer 2007. An announcement will be posted to the USMLE website approximately two months before any items with associated media clips appear on an actual USMLE examination. When an implementation date is announced, ECFMG will post an announcement to this web page.

Like the other items that make up these exams, the new items will be in multiple-choice format. Currently, some multiple-choice items are associated with exhibits that examinees review before selecting an answer. The new items will be associated with exhibits that have audio and/or video findings, which examinees will play before selecting an answer.

Although not yet part of the actual exams, a small number of multiple-choice items with associated media clips are available now as part of the 2007 USMLE Practice and Orientation Materials, which are available on the USMLE website. These are the same orientation materials available on the 2007 USMLE compact disc (CD), which ECFMG mails to applicants when they are registered for examination. For each exam, the 2007 sample test materials include a small block of items that have associated audio and/or video findings, and the tutorial includes instructions for playing the media clips.

Updated information will be posted to the USMLE website as it becomes available. If you plan to take Step 1, Step 2 CK, or Step 3, you should monitor the USMLE website.
