hI,

From this wierd transplant rejection, can anyone explain whether this concept is ok?

GVHD (Graft versus host disease) : Donor T cells are sensitised against the MHC antigens in the host cells

HVGD(Host versus Graft disease) : Recipient T cells are sensitised against MHC antigens of the donor cells.

Thanx

no, GVHD= donor's T cells reject recipient's ALL cells as "non-self" and destroy practically everything IN THE HOST (RECIPIENT)
HVGD=recipient's immune system sees dono'r organ/cells as "non-self" and destroyes TRANSPLANED tissue

Thanks babydoc...So..Bone marrow transplant without irradiation is an example of GVHD and most other transplant rejections are HVGD...Right??

Can you drop in some more examples of these reactions??

before bone marrow transplant Pt receives irradiation so HOST would not react to transplanted tissue, but DONOR's BM is not inactivated and that is why GVHD MIGHT HAPPEN, but not necessay WILL happen.
as for GVHD i don't know any other situation other than BMT (transplanted cells ARE CELLS OF IMMUNE SYSTEM tha are capable to launch immune respond)
HVGD - any ALLOGRAFT (liver, kidney, lung...you name it) can cause this reaction

Thanx again babydoc..Just now checked it out...GVHD can occur in any organ with increased lymphocyte count..Examples-Blood cells without irradiation,Even liver cells.

yepp....and theoretially also in case of thymus and spleen implant in immunocompromised patient ... anything with lymphocytes !!
