How do you examine ROM in a back pain pt? If you are suspecting disk prolapse will you examine ROM?When one say rectal examination (say for acute/chronic diarrhoea) what does it mean? Why do one have to examine genitalia in a pt with dark urine?

1. Ask the SP to bend fowrd and then laterally. 2. I would test for ROM in back pain case (including disk prolapse). 3. Not sure if this will answer your question: Rectal examination means inspection of the anus, sphincter tone, digital palpation of rectum and prostate exam in male case. You should ask the SP permission to do a rectal exam later. 4. To look for lesions, trauma, ulcers, infections, inflammation, discharge, masses, etc, etc. Hope ti helps

Well according to UW you should do ROM in a back pain case even if disc prolapse it´s your 1st diagnostic impression... Maybe since you don´t have a definitive diagnosis and some of the differentials would need ROM testing that´s why they suggest you to do it, I think because of the cs format it´s ok to do it, but again this is just my opinion. Thanks for the input Docvick Anyone else?...
