So, Jan. and no interviews whatsoever. What should I do: scramble or go for Step 3 and observership during April - May and apply next year again with better credentials?

in a worst case scenario ...both....but I hope you manage to get something before either of that.

Advantage of scramble: If I nail something, I will not have to go all through this again, but I will most probably be on J1 and probably in a place not of my choice.

Advantage of Improving Credentials: I may have more opportunity at good places of my choice, plus chance of getting H1b.

What do you think?

Your second option is not a definite ocurrence. Applications next year will be just as many if not more.Plus one year is a very long time. Get into the system. You can make the most of what you have if you are capable. And its not necessary tht you will be on a J1.Remember hospitals will be just as desperate to fill in their slots. This is my POV...you have to decide based on your priorities.

well from my scramble experience, they will always ask you for your visa issues.. if you need a visa they would reject you immediately. well that was from my experience.. so maybe you could ask the opinion of other people.. if you are in the United States, then might as well Scramble.. cause for me i'm going back home.. i'm not waiting for the match.. so it will based on your priorities.. but again if you are here in the US... SCRAMBLE.. you won't lose anything by doing that...

I have read what you wrote in a lot of posts, that scramble is only a good shot if you have no visa issues.

So how was this year for you, gulliermo?

Yes I admit I dont have any past experience of the scramble. But again we are talking about a worst case scenario which might not necessarily be an eventuality.Shall do some searchng on this sure.

Silence MD, try to go for observership now, attend morning reports and register for Step 3, so you have someting added on your CV by the scramble time.

I wouldn't think about the next match.

If I were you I would think about "outside the match programs". I just heard of their legend. more than 1/5 of all residents are getting positions through this way (this is what I read). But there is no source to get them. You will have to find them. make dozens, maybe hundred of calls shocked. A friend of a friend of mine (but not my friend) got a position through this last year. I dont know which program it was (because he was a friend of a friend of mine but not my friend).

Did not experience scramble myself, and hopefully not.
A friend of mine tried last year, got one call from the hospital. But then was asked about visa status, and then told that they can't sponsor visa. So, basically just lose it...

Well, it's still worth to give a shot. Good luck!

I have heard about this issue a lot of times.
