mytime and catz.2006: thanks!

catz.2006~
it took me ~ 2.5 months for 1st read; ~6weeks for 2nd; 2wks for 3rd. Start using the FA in your 2nd and 3rd so that you can add notes, transfer stuff into FA and get used to its format. In the end ~2 weeks for FA and Q bank only. Keep referring to FA while doiing the Q bank.
No, I am not a fast learner by any means - DO use the flash cards technique - I didnt believe in it myself at the start, but now I swear by it. Good luck,
jay

Hi doc.jay,
Thanks a lot for your prompt reply. Can you please advise me if you felt that HY cell and molecular biology/HY histology/HY biostats is necessary to score well on the exam? I see a lot of people saying that molecular biology had tough questions in the exam. Did you happen to use any of these books in your review or found them useful........Do you think kaplan is enough for these things and for pharm and microbiology? Thanks for taking time to answer. I really appreciate all the help. Looking forward to your reply.

Hey doc.jay,
Congratulations on that smashing score. Wow, you must be a genius to finish everything in such a short period and so well. nod It just shows that with proper planning.hard work and time management great things can be achieved. If you don't mind me asking ,are you an american medical graduate? Anyway congratulations and goodluck on step 2.

catz~
I tried HY-Histo, but I only had the 2nd ed which was too long, repititious, and basically of no use. Pretty much, most of what you need to know is in Webpath - which you should definitely do - it covers the normal and patho-histology.
No idea on HY-Cell Biol, Biostats; for the latter, Kaplan and FA is enough.
Micro and Immunol are infact one of the best (in my opinion) of the kaplan series .. way more than enough. The imp thing is to suuplement the additional info into FA .. otherwise, if you only do FA as it is, then you will not be able to revise all the extra details from Kaplan.
Hope this helps, best,
Jay

patho - thanks! I'm an IMG and was an average joe in my class...
I dont think that 5months of full time study is such a 'short period of time' ... Also, I stayed away from Goljan and USMLEWORLD and NBME ... no regrets... there are only so many Qs and Qbanks that you can do - Kaplan's Q bank is enough in my opinion.
good luck on your prep!

Hi doc.jay,
Thanks for replying to my queries. I wanted ask you if Hy neuroanatomy is a must or kaplan is good enough for neuro?I feel like it may take longer to read Hy neuro?
Please let me know your opinion if hy embryo and hy neuro is a must or I can do kaplan for them and if kaplan pharm and behavioural science is good?
Thanks again for all the help.

I personally preferred HY-Neuro and HY-embryo over the Kaplan notes. Yes, HY-Neuro is dense and not easy to read, but CNS is afterall a major component of the exam too.
Kaplan Pharma and Beh Sci are enough! I never touched Lippin for Pharma. Just make sure that you add stuff from Kap Pharma onto your FA b/c FA's review of pharma is rather brief.
Generally, Mechs of Axs, interaxs, etc are important to know.
hope this helps; good luck.

Sadaf,
for gross anat, I just used the Netter's atlas and the CTs/MRIs in HY-Cross Anat side by side. This was good enough. But the lumbar and pelvic and CTs that I got in my exam were still weird! I have heard the same from many other people.
For Neuro, do the same: put Netter's cross sections and HY-Neuro side by side. HY-Neuro is a great book and those sections in Chapter 1 are amazing.

For both biostats and phrama, I just used the Kaplan notes. I beleive Biostats is covered in the Kaplan-BehSci book.
Good luck,
Jay

bhushan and drmohamed811 : thanks!

the flash card 'technique' is simple ... just jot down the hard facts that you may trouble remembering on a note pad or a 3x5 card and review them whenever you have a chance .... repitition helps in remembering things like the the diff maneuvers for cardiac murmurs, diff biochm inbron errors, rate limiting Es for synthesis, CNS lesions etc etc ... basically whatever you thiink is important,, but which you are finding difficult to retain from Kaplan's notes.
best,
Jay

try and work out where you are most of your mistakes when doing the q banks. Are you not able to recall stuff that you have already gone through, is it mostly 'conceptual' stuff that you are getting wrong, is it some particualr subject that you are having trouble with ... "Quality" of qbank practice is as important is quantity. Make sure you are spending enough time reviewing the explantations and reviewing the stuff that you are getting wrong within the qbanks.
I wrote something for this in my very first post: on how you can very easily analyze where most of your qbank mistakes are. Aim for improving on them.
Hope this helps, best of luck,
Jay

  #43

Wow, 99 , can do in months , not yrs prep. Like the plan.
CONGRATULATION.

HY histo should or should not in the study ? How abt BRS histo, has CD too ?

Netter atlast, where can you get used one?

re; Bioethics, U of Washington Q web site, could you share, post the site address
Web path address needed also. Isn't it alot there to see? Which selective one we should see or focus on?

Kap Q Bank which way is better? ..........

Subject wise or mis & match, can it be system wise too

Timed or tutor mode

Read ansewr, explain after each Q or each set no. Q eg 25 or 50.

Thanks !!!
GL in st 2 & all.

shwe, thanks!

I did HY_Histo and foudn it to be quite useless; too descriptive. If you have Wheater's I would recommend that - just skim through the basic text and slides.

Netter atlast, where can you get used one?
No idea! Try ebay though.

re; Bioethics, U of Washington Q web site, could you share, post the site address

http://library.med.utah.edu/WebPath/webpath.html

Just start doing it and you will be able to figure out yourself as to whatis important or not. There is a lot of repitition, but stick to the basics and you'll be fine. DONT try to do this all in one day, its too confusing that way.

I think the tutor mode is useless unless you are scoring so low that you need hlep in figuring out how to approach each Qs.
The best way is to match the Subj + System eg: CVS, CNS, Renal + ALL systems. The online format is very helpful, you can always use the search format to figure out how many Qs are left stil in each subject or system. If you are running out of time, make sure that you do atleast the imp stuf, CNS, CVS, Renal, BehSci etc.
Hope this helps. All the best,
Jay

How many Hr per day to do all of timed, re read of all 200 Q, A ?

Shwe,
I just did the standard online Q bank - didnt have time to do any other q banks.
You're right, it does take time to build up enough concentration and practice to 'digest' 200+ Qs each day. But the earlier you start, the better. This takes up pretty much the whole day ie full time study with ~8-10hrs a day. There is no other way than ..... to just do it!!
best,
Jay

  #48

Thanks.

What we've to do, we'll all have to do to overcome the st 1.

Any notes, or write down of info, actually, almost all of Qbank in any wher else too?
Pl bare with my curiosity.
I'm just the junior in studying.
